This article is missing the point. Yes, plastic straws make up a fraction of the total plastic waste in the ocean, but the movement to ban plastic straws has more to do with the disproportionate effect straws *in particular* have on certain species of sea life, sea turtles especially. So, yes, please ban plastic straws and use reuseable ones or at least biodegradable ones. But ALSO reduce single use plastic of all kinds. These do not have to be mutually exclusive actions, and shouldn't be. In the case of sea turtles, they consume millions, if not possibly billions, of plastic bags and other plastic objects they mistake for jellyfish and other ocean prey. Same with other animals. And that is only part of the ocean plastic problem.
Skipping straws may be hip. But there are much better ways to fight pollution.
