Happy birthday John Carlos who was born June 5, 1945. He was Olympian, professional football player, and lifelong activist for human rights. In 1968, he won a bronze medal in the 200-meter dash at the Mexico City Olympics.
While receiving their medals, Mr Carlos and gold medal winner Tommie Smith stood barefoot with their heads bowed and fists raised while the US national anthem played, to protest American racism. Silver medalist Peter Norman of Australia also wore an Olympic Project for Human Rights badge in solidarity.
The International Olympic Committee expelled them from the Games. ❤️🖤💚
