Join AIA St. Paul and Urban Sketchers Twin Cities on Sunday, June 14, from noon to 3:00 PM for a creative afternoon exploring the Rice Park area of Downtown St. Paul. We will meet at the Rice Park Fountain at noon to provide some architectural background on the park and three nearby architectural gems: the St. Paul Downtown Library, the Ordway Center, and the Landmark Center. Sketching prompts will be provided for those interested in stretching beyond their usual approach.

This is a casual, outdoor event open to all skill levels, and kids are more than welcome to join the fun! Please dress for the weather and bring your own sketching materials. We will provide some light snacks and water, but feel free to bring along anything else you might need for the afternoon.

AIA St. Paul is thrilled to announce the results of the 2025 AIA St. Paul Prize design competition. A jury of Kyle Patneau, AIA, Seann Ringwall, AIA, Ellen Stewart, Ross Altheimer, Assoc. AIA, Joe Spencer, Dave Higgins, and Andrew Sun reviewed the submissions and were impressed by the exceptional quality of work presented.

Recipient: “Unbound” by Alap Parikh, Assoc. AIA, M.Arch

The analysis of site context and the issues identified in the prompt is methodical and well-reasoned, effectively leveraging local precedents to inform both needs and potential solutions. The proposal establishes a strong connection to Downtown through visual and pedestrian extensions of Minnesota Street and Cedar Street. Adaptive reuse of the existing structures along Kellogg Boulevard into mixed-use towers thoughtfully embraces underutilized infrastructure to provide housing and community amenities. From a master planning perspective, the proposal successfully addresses the prompt and promotes a level of vibrancy not achieved by the other submissions. While the design and imagery are compelling, they may be somewhat overly ambitious; greater restraint could yield improved aesthetic consistency.

The AIA St. Paul Chapter extends its heartfelt thanks to all participants for their thoughtful and creative contributions. Each submission reflected a deep understanding of the prompt and showcased the talent and vision of our design community.

To celebrate the exceptional talent showcased in the competition, all submissions are featured on our website https://www.aia-mn.org/2025-spp/ This virtual exhibition allows a broader audience to appreciate the innovative ideas that came out of this two-and-a-half-week competition.

AIA Minnesota is proud to stand with our members who are exercising their constitutional rights and showing up in support of immigrants – including the immigrant members of our architecture community.

We are focused on supporting our members and staff who are navigating this difficult time, whether they and their loved ones face the fear of leaving their homes, are stepping forward to protest and to protect their neighbors, or are balancing ongoing professional and family obligations with civic engagement and community service. We are grateful for all the ways our members are exhibiting the empathy and humanity that is central to the profession of architecture.
