Longtime partners Hari AM and Dr. Mahesh Kappanayil have published their work on using immersive 3D technologies to predict, plan and treat complex heart surgeries in the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery!

We collaborated to find out whether extended reality (XR) can revolutionize heart care training—and it can!

In 2025, we partnered to run an XR pilot program that connected cardiologists and surgeons from India, Brazil, Vietnam, Malaysia and the UK virtually to discuss 11 active cases. Using 3D models of actual patients’ hearts and XR/VR as outlined in their paper, these clinicians shared insights, developed treatments plans and improved their understanding of complex heart disease in children without ever leaving their hospital.

The results were tremendous:
▪️ In 100% of cases, recommendations from the virtual group shaped the care plan.
▪️ Four children have already undergone successful surgery.
▪️ Participant understanding and diagnostic accuracy improved from 51% to 100%.
▪️ Clinicians reported a significant increase in confidence.

This project was funded by The Ping and Amy Chao Family Foundation and Transparent Fish Fund.

Can you imagine a future where all kids have the heart care they need where they live? We’re committed to a bold new plan to double the number of Children’s HeartLink Centers of Excellence from 6 to 12 by 2030. And, you can join the 12 by 2030 initiative today!

The reality today is that 9 in 10 children with congenital heart disease still lack access to the care they need. Our proven model shows that with partnership and training, more children born with heart conditions can be treated in their own communities. When we invest in creating sustainable heart pediatric heart care programs, exceptional outcomes follow:

▪️ Bệnh viện Nhi Trung ương Vietnam National Children’s Hospital | Grew from 300 heart surgeries in 2017 to 1,700 annually by 2025.
▪️ Amrita Hospital, Kochi, India | Screens 10,000 children a year, fast‑tracks 350+ infants to early surgery with a 98% success rate, and leads national training and research.

Together, we will train more clinicians, build stronger heart care teams and bring lifesaving heart care to thousands more children who urgently need it.

🌟 What it takes to transform congenital heart disease care!

In May, Children’s HeartLink Center of Excellence Amrita Hospital Kochi, India welcomed a respiratory therapist and three nurses from our partner hospital G. Kuppuswamy Naidu Memorial (GKNM) Hospital, India. The GKNM Hospital clinicians learned key skills in caring for children in the pediatric cardiac ICU after heart surgery, including preventing infections and using advanced equipment like ventilators and lung ultrasound.

Amrita Hospital Kochi was once like GKNM Hospital, receiving mentorship and guidance from clinicians at leading U.S. pediatric heart care departments like Boston Children’s Hospital and Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital.

Today, they’ve become the trainers. Not only do they offer one of the best training programs in pediatric cardiology but also lead in research and development of holistic heart care programs in low-resource environments.

This is the regional impact of one Children’s HeartLink Center of Excellence.

Imagine the transformative nature of 12.

Help us double our Centers of Excellence from 6 to 12 to bring high-quality heart care to millions more children by 2030.

⚡️Children’s HeartLink is no stranger to the power of international collaboration.

With contributions from our Vice President of Global Strategy and Advocacy, Bistra Zheleva, a new science advisory paper published in the Journal of the American Heart Association on Kawasaki disease highlights how international collaboration in research, diagnosis and treatment is key to optimizing outcomes.

The paper stresses that:
▪️ Early diagnosis and treatment are critical
▪️ Care has improved due to collaborative efforts in research and treatment, but access to care remain uneven
▪️ To improve access to care, collaborative efforts need to consider differences between communities, including culture and available resources

Kawasaki disease primarily affects children under five, it is a rare condition that causes inflammation of blood vessels and can lead to serious heart conditions.

At Children’s HeartLink, we believe every child deserves a healthy heart. Collaboration is one way we can make the world a better place for our children.

“I can see the sustainability of Children’s HeartLinks’ programs. It makes the work so satisfying. I can tell all my hard work is playing off. The nurses [in my training courses], over time, are asking questions—there's momentum and engagement. [The classes] are helping them with their work.” — Erin Babine, pediatric cardiac ICU nurse, Boston Children’s Hospital

In 2023, Erin started working with us to develop an educational initiative for pediatric cardiac IUC nurses in Bangladesh to advance critical care skills and knowledge.

The course has since expanded to nurses in Vietnam and Ghana and come back as a training opportunity for nurses at her own Boston Children’s Hospital.

Incredible nurses improving post-surgery care!

Led by Nurse Educator Geetha, dedicated nurses at G. Kuppuswamy Naidu Memorial (GKNM) Hospital in Coimbatore, India added CPR training and a nutritional booklet to Children’s HeartLink’s Parental Education and Discharge Instructions. This ensures parents across the state can provide the best care possible to their children when recovering from heart surgery.

Geetha also trained Children’s HeartLink India Partnership Manager Samyukta Mutnury on CPR!

A child’s ability to thrive after heart surgery rests on their post-operative care. G. Kuppuswamy Naidu Memorial Hospital - GKNMH nurses are taking the lead to improve care for children and families during this critical period of recovery.

Leading the way towards holistic congenital heart disease care!

Dr. Manu Raj and Dr. Sonam Manoj from Children’s HeartLink Center of Excellence Amrita Hospital, Kochi, India visited our partner hospital G. Kuppuswamy Naidu Memorial (GKNM) Hospital in Coimbatore, India. They shared their research and approach to neurodevelopment care for children with congenital heart disease and met with G. Kuppuswamy Naidu Memorial Hospital - GKNMH CEO Dr. Veluswamy and its team of pediatricians and clinical psychologist.

GKNM Hospital is developing their own neurodevelopmental program like the one at Amrita Hospital, Kochi Both hospitals are looking forward to future exchanges in knowledge and best practices as their programs grow.

As a Children’s HeartLink Center of Excellence, Amrita Hospital, Kochi is demonstrating the critical impact it has on developing regional partners and programs that transform and improve care for children with congenital heart disease.

Children’s HeartLink Centers of Excellence expand access to heart care for children. Help us double our centers from 6 to 12 by 2030.
