We'd like to extend a big congratulations to Dr. Francisco Candido Monteiro Cajueiro from Real Hospital Português on winning the Aldo R. Castañeda Fellowship Award! This fellowship offers Latin American congenital heart surgeons within their first ten years of practice the opportunity to spend up to three months of observational training with a North America hospital host.

This recognition matters! Elevating and equipping local teams with the skills and knowledge to become leaders in their field is how we improve pediatric heart care. Congratulations Doctor!

This week on the margins of the 81st United Nations General Assembly, Children’s HeartLink brought together leaders from government, civil society, patient organizations, healthcare, philanthropy, and the private sector to elevate childhood-onset heart disease as a global health priority and build momentum toward a proposed 2027 World Health Assembly resolution.

We heard powerful stories from patient and family advocates that underscored a simple truth: access to lifesaving heart care should not depend on where someone is born or what resources their family has.

We also heard from leading clinicians, private-sector partners, civil society organizations, and government leaders who reinforced that childhood-onset heart disease is not just a cardiac issue. It is a child survival, health equity, and health systems issue.

For millions of people living with childhood-onset heart disease, the cost of inaction is measured in futures needlessly cut short when solutions exist. Thankfully, momentum is building. Now is the time to turn commitment into action.

Thank you to our partners, including the Council for International Understanding, American Heart Association, Global Alliance for Rheumatic and Congenital Hearts, CHD Alliance, Healthineers, and HealthCare, as well as the governments of Egypt and Tanzania, advocates, clinicians, patients, and families who helped move this agenda forward.

✅ Build systems to address CHD that are sustainable, resilient, and embedded into healthcare access initiatives that already exist
✅ Create a tiered system of care that can provide different levels of care beyond initial screenings or acute interventions
✅ International cooperation on this issue, including on collecting data tracking changes in the incidence and treatment of CHD

Education and raising awareness about heart conditions and disability matters.

Nobody should face stigma or shame because they or their child was born with CHD.

CHD can be caused by environmental or genetic factors that are often not within a person’s control. Yet, many families affected by CHD have blame cast on them or endure social hardship.

That’s why educating and changing attitudes around CHD and disability matter. We are building a movement to raise awareness about CHD and advocate for a change in global health infrastructure so every person can access the heart care they need. Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) doesn’t affect everyone the same way. There are many types of CHDs with varying levels of severity that can vary from person to person. For example, women born with CHD often face additional reproductive health, emotional and psychosocial challenges throughout their life.

Where you live should not determine whether you are able to access heart care. Yet for many children born with congenital heart disease (CHD) in low- and middle- income countries, especially in rural or remote areas, healthcare teams are not equipped to care for simple or complex heart conditions.
