Today is World Teachers' Day, and UNESCO just released a number that stopped us: for every two teachers working in the world today, we need one more by 2030. 🌍
That is 107 million teachers now and 50 million more needed. Here is the part that matters most to us. Fifty-eight percent of those hires will not grow the workforce. They will replace teachers who leave the profession. Recruiting a teacher is one thing. Keeping him is the mission.

Now zoom in to Minnesota. Fewer than 1 in 200 teachers in our state is a Black man, and fewer than 50 Black men teach in Minnesota elementary schools. Our goal is 20% Black male teachers in about 100 elementary schools with the greatest need, nearly 400 teachers by 2035.

Global shortage. Local gap. Brick by brick, we are closing it. 🧱

Happy Hispanic Heritage Month!

Hispanic Heritage Month is here, and Black Men Teach is celebrating alongside our Hispanic and Latino educators, students, and community partners across Minnesota.

Representation is at the heart of everything we do. We know firsthand what it means for a student to finally see themselves in the person leading their classroom, and that is why we stand with every effort to bring more Hispanic and Latino educators into schools too. Building a teaching force that reflects our students is work bigger than any one community, and it is work we are proud to support together.

To every Hispanic and Latino educator shaping a classroom this year, thank you. Your presence matters, and your students are lucky to have you.

World Teachers’ Day (October 5) is almost here! But if we're being honest, we don't wait for a calendar date to celebrate our teachers. 🍎

Every day, our Fellows show up for their students and every day, this community shows up for them. The group texts after a hard day. The high-fives in the hallway. The "I saw what you did for that kid" messages. That's appreciation too, and it happens long before and long after any single day on the calendar.

But we're still going to make some noise next week because our Fellows deserve it, and then some. 👀

Please join us in welcoming Robert E. Murry to the Black Men Teach team! 🎉

Robert steps into the role of Director of Secondary Programs & Educator Pathways, bringing more than 30 years of experience in Minnesota education and nonprofit leadership. He's here to lead our "stage-to-wage" pipeline by connecting young Black men in high school with near-peer College Fellow mentors, hands-on classroom experience, and a clear path into teaching careers. His résumé includes senior leadership roles at The Sanneh Foundation and All Square Social Enterprise, plus board chair service for Better Futures Minnesota and Wellspring Second Chance Center.
When we asked him why he joined BMT, his answer was one word: "Legacy." That's the kind of commitment now leading our secondary pathway work.

Please join us in welcoming Ti-Esha Williams-Vaughn to the Black Men Teach team! 🎉

Ti-Esha steps into the role of Apprenticeship Navigator, bringing more than 17 years of experience as a teacher, instructional coach, and principal. New Jersey raised, South Carolina shaped (shoutout to her alma maters, Claflin University and South Carolina State University!), and now proudly Minnesota-based, Ti-Esha will be a trusted guide and advocate for our Fellows as they navigate their journey into teaching.

When we asked her why she joined BMT, she answered in one word: "Legacy." As a mom of two Black sons and sister to two teachers, this work is personal for her. We couldn't be more grateful to have her in it with us.

👑 Huge congratulations to our team at Black Men Teach & CEO, Markus Flynn who was named a 2026 "Crowned in Excellence Honoree" by The Links, Incorporated, Greater Twin Cities Chapter!

This recognition means so much, not just to Markus, but to every Black educator working to change what's possible for kids across Minnesota. And Markus said it best in his acceptance speech, he accepted this honor "on behalf of all Black educators who are committed to a career and a life of service."

That's who this is really for: every Fellow, every classroom, every kid who now sees a leader who looks like them.

We're deeply grateful to The Links, Incorporated for seeing our work and choosing to shine a light on it. That's exactly what community looks like, seeing good work, and helping the world see it too.

Why elementary? It's not by accident. 🍎

Every Black Men Teach Fellow chooses to show up for the youngest learners on purpose because the earliest years are where a child first decides what's possible for them. Before a student ever hears the word "graduation," they're already forming their sense of who belongs in a classroom and who doesn't.

The research backs it up: students with one Black male teacher are 29% less likely to drop out later in life and up to 39% for students from low-income households. That's the power of representation, starting young.

This brings us to the important work of our team of Fellows. The men who choose K-5 classrooms across the Twin Cities, on purpose, every single day. 🖤🧡

🎓 Today kicks off National HBCU Week and at Black Men Teach, we're celebrating loud.

Historically Black Colleges and Universities have been producing brilliant, capable, confident Black educators since 1837. Several of our own Fellows walked those same halls before they ever stepped into a Minnesota classroom. HBCUs aren't just where our pipeline starts. They're where the belief starts. The belief that a Black man belongs at the front of the room.

Fewer than 1 in 200 Minnesota teachers is a Black man. Our HBCU partnerships are one of the ways we're working to change that by recruiting, relocating, and preparing HBCU grads to bring their excellence into the elementary classrooms that need them most.

This week, we're celebrating the institutions and the individuals building the Half Percent, brick by brick. 🧱🖤

6 men. One mission. A whole lot of magic. ✨

This school year, Black Men Teach welcomes 26 Fellows into K-5 classrooms across the Twin Cities. Each one showing up daily to do the quiet, powerful work of transformation: turning confusion into confidence, turning "I can't" into "watch me," turning an empty spot at the front of the classroom into a leader who looks like the students he teaches.

Being a Fellow isn't just a title. It's mentorship before school starts. It's lesson plans built at midnight. It's showing five-year-olds and fifth graders alike that they're seen, believed in, and capable of anything.

Brick by brick, these 26 men are building something bigger than a classroom. They're building futures.
