REPOST: 🗣️
This super cute moment between a son and his mom highlights how confusing racial constructs really are. The funny (sometimes very painful) part is that not everyone in our families or close circles agrees on who is or isn’t a particular race or belongs to a particular culture. How we are seen or unseen has real implications and should be explored in safer spaces with others who may understand or are willing to witness and support our journey.
🎉We’re excited to relaunch our “Read as White” Dialogue Track for the first time since 2021!
*The Read as White Dialogue Track is an 18+ dedicated space for mixed, mixed-race, multiracial, biracial, multiethnic and transracial/transnational adoptees who connect with the experience of being perceived as white by others.
➡️ This perception could be due to looks (such as light skin), voice (we’ve had folks share about being “heard” as white, for example) and/or other traits. We use the term “read as white” to name how we are perceived, without centering whiteness as aspiration or assuming intent to “pass.”
🗓️👀Check all the dates via the link in our bio. In our May 9th Read As White dialogue, we’re gathering to reconnect, reflect, and process what we’ve lived through—together. We’ll hold space to process our experiences with Metro Surge and the ongoing realities of violence and repression, while grounding in community care and the shared experience of being read as white.
Eleonore Wesserle (she/her), one of the previous Read As White co-facilitators, is returning to facilitate the May 9, June 6, and July 11 Read as White dialogues.
If you connect with the experience of moving through the world being perceived by others as white, please join us! Spots are filling up!
