WICS provides college scholarships to African American students from North Minneapolis. Established by Teto Wilson in 2018.

As the fall semester kicks off, we would like to wish our scholars GOOD LUCK as they head off to college. WICS scholars will be in six states this year! Our students are heading to:

Georgia – Spelman College
Maryland – Morgan State University
Minnesota – University of Minnesota (Twin Cities, Rochester), Hamline University
Virginia – Hampton University
North Carolina – North Carolina Central University
Texas – University of North Texas

TIPS FOR BLACK STUDENTS AT PREDOMINANTLY WHITE INSTITUTIONS

Half of our 2026 class of WICS scholars will attend HBCU’s – which means the other half are attending predominately white institutions. This article from Psychology Today has valuable advice about navigating a PWI as a Black student.

- Speaking up in class plants seeds of visibility and engagement with professors.
- Extracurriculars are fertile ground where joy, leadership, and culture can flourish.

WICS AWARD CEREMONY

On Monday night, Wilson’s Image College Scholarship hosted the highlight of our year: the annual award ceremony honoring eight wonderful students with $5,000 each toward their education journey.

This year’s class of scholars included one repeat award winner and seven new scholars. One powerful, meaningful annual tradition is the Q&A among the scholars, hosted by WICS founder Teto L. Wilson, where students share their hopes, goals and insights. Audience members also shared advice about financial aid, mental health and connections both old and new.

The ceremony was held at the beautiful IDS Center Tower Club on the 41st floor of the IDS building (many thanks to The Minneapolis Foundation for assisting with the event space).

Today we celebrate Juneteenth, which became a federal holiday in 2021.

Juneteenth is recognized as the nation’s second independence day, celebrated primarily within the African American community but largely unknown to many Americans, according to the National Museum of African American History & Culture.

A COLLEGE DEGREE IN THREE YEARS

Save time, save money? Yes, please!

The Star Tribune recently reported: “A handful of Minnesota universities are part of a growing national trend that has students earning undergraduate degrees that require 90 credits, rather than the typical 120 credits. School officials say the degrees meet students’ and employers’ needs without sacrificing quality at a time when higher education is under attack due to rising tuition, student debt and doubts about return on investment.”
