The bricks that RPCVs and their loved ones donate to the Peace Corps Plaza and National Service Park are a critical part of making the Peace Corps Plaza possible and meaningful. However, donations of bricks are just a piece of the financial support that generous RPCVs offer to the Plaza. The Building Fund is an essential part of financing additional important landscaping, interpretive, educational and recreational features of the Plaza and allows for RPCVs to give more than just the cost of a brick while still leaving a mark and making an impact on the park.

Many RPCVs remember their time serving abroad as a highlight of their lives and as one of the pinnacles of their professional and service careers. For some, it opened their eyes to the world for the first time; it was a transformative experience. The value and significance of the time Peace Corps Volunteers spend abroad is captured by the fact that many RPCVs who have died have the Peace Corps mentioned in their obituaries as one of the most important endeavors they have ever pursued.

To remember the service of RPCVs in their obituaries or between their surviving friends and family is a wonderful way to continue to honor the importance of the Peace Corps in their lives. In addition, the Peace Corps Plaza serves as a valuable extension of this memory, by letting a memorial brick of a deceased RPCV represent part of the legacy of volunteers. It also allows that memory to serve to inspire service and life changing moments of future generations of young people in America. While many RPCVs chose to donate a brick to the plaza for a friend or themselves, if you are a loved one of a departed RPCV, you can donate a special memorial brick to remember their legacy.

The Peace Corps Plaza will stand next to the Military Commons as a cornerstone of the National Service Park in Plainview MN to honor those who have served our country in different but equally important ways. The National Service Park is designed to remind Americans how volunteering makes us a stronger country. The goal is to educate and inspire future generations to serve. Many of the Peace Corps Volunteers who have already made a donation of a brick to the Peace Corps Plaza are Americans who have also served in our U.S. Military (or Vista/AmeriCorps). Many have already indicated their national service experience and dates on their personalized brick and we continue to encourage volunteers to do so. While the Peace Corps and U.S. Military may be different, both organizations participate in humanitarian and community support efforts abroad and at home and we are grateful for the service of men and women in both.

The Peace Corps Legacy Association follows in the footsteps of countless Americans who have been personally committed to serving both at home and abroad. One figure in particular, Frank B. Kellogg, Minnesota Senator and U.S Secretary of State- has been an inspiration for many Minnesotans. Raised in Olmsted County, MN which borders the city of Plainview, home of the National Service Park and Peace Corps Plaza, Kellogg had an impressive career through his commitment to service. His legacy started nationally, as a federal prosecutor and trust buster against both Union Pacific Railroad and Standard Oil Co. On the international stage he helped promote peace, cooperation and diplomacy in place of war, as an author of the Kellogg-Briand Pact, culminating in a Nobel Peace Prize. Kellogg never received a formal education past the age of 14, growing up a farming boy. Although his career after his humble beginnings may seem extraordinary, his story is familiar to many Americans who have followed him in serving through the Peace Corps and other ways. The goal for the National Service Park and Peace Corps Plaza is to carry parallel stories of volunteers as an inspiration to future generations, and as a reminder of the power and potential of Americans from all parts of our country.

The Peace Corps Plaza is just one part of the National Service Park being constructed near Rochester, MN, with a goal of bringing stories of service to young people. The Peace Corps Plaza is particularly meaningful to Alexis, as a junior at Carleton College and a student and young person interested in a future career in service. To become part of this mission, Returned Peace Corps Volunteers and others can donate a brick to the park today. Each brick tells a story -- your story, your service, or the name of someone who inspired you. Together, these stories build a legacy that will inspire generations to come.

The National Service Park and Peace Corps Plaza is a 3.5-acre park set to be built in dedication to service. Part of what makes it so special is it's location in the Midwestern small town of Plainview, just outside Rochester, MN. Rochester is home of the famous Mayo Clinic which attracts millions of visitors each year from around the country and world, giving the park a global stage.

Supporting the themes of service and community, the National Service Park and Peace Corps Plaza, will be the Trailhead of the Minnesota Great River Ridge Bike and Recreation Trail, https://parksandtrails.org/state-trails/great-river-ridge/. Nearby in Wabasha, MN is the National Eagle Center https://www.nationaleaglecenter.org and in Winona, MN, the world-renown Minnesota Marine Art Museum www.mmam.org. All three of these multi-million-dollar projects in these rural towns were founded and developed by Returned Peace Corps Volunteers.

Perhaps most important to the park's location are the people who the park celebrates. Peace Corps volunteers are often ordinary Americans, many of whom come from rural America, in other words, places like Plainview MN. What better way to celebrate those who left their small towns to serve than to return to the heart of our country to give back to their communities in celebration of their service.

Christi Williams, a RPCV from Poland, is interested in keeping the spirit of the Peace Corps alive, and in celebrating and remembering volunteers' personal contributions to America’s history.
