While families and community are enjoying the last weeks of summer, we have started ramping up to the new school year!

Last week that looked like spending time with Minneapolis Public School’s new cohort of educators at New Teacher Orientation. We spent Wednesday-Friday answering questions, getting new teachers signed up, and having lots of great conversations about collective power.

Thanks to our retirees and everyone who helped make orientation such a success!

Solidarity is built.

Last week, our organizing team spent three days with staff and elected officers from Greg Martinson United Teachers of South Washington County Columbia Heights Local 710 Anoka Hennepin Education MN SPFE 28 Bloomington Federation of Paraprofessionals Local 4399, Education Minnesota Osseo ESPs Local 7325, White Bear Lake Area Educators and Education Minnesota St. Francis Local 1977 as part of National Education Association ’s Campaign Lab program. We dug in on sharing learnings, and process for winning strong contracts.

One thing that we heard from everyone assembled was a hunger for wins. Together, we can fight for the fully funded public schools that our students deserve.

Solidarity is a verb. It requires doing.

The twin cities became intimately familiar with that fact this past winter but, our community’s love for our neighbors was on full display again this past Saturday. The Twin Cities Solidarity Picnic was an excellent opportunity to gather outside, share a meal, and celebrate community.

As we move toward a new school year, it was wonderful to enjoy some of the dregs of summer!

Minneapolis loves our public schools!

You’ve likely seen one of these signs up in the window of your favorite business or community institution. This summer, our team of National Education Association Community Action and Partnership Engagement (CAPE) grantees have been out pounding the pavement to help make that happen. They’ve been working to check-in with institutions in our community about the importance of public schools and talk about how to help support the fight for the destination district that Minneapolis deserves.

Last week we held a celebration at the union hall for Halima Ainte, a Minneapolis Adult Education student and inspirational force in our community.

Halima won this year’s Literacy Action Network award for an Outstanding Learner. Living through civil war, refugee camps, resettlement to Minnesota, and Metro Surge, Halima has never been willing to stop learning. She recently graduated with her Adult Diploma, and continues to push others to enroll in MPS’ Adult Education program as well as other career development opportunities.

Alongside Halima, we celebrated the work of the Adult Education team in fighting to save their program earlier this year, for which they received LAN’s 2026 Advocacy Award. There is still more to do, and we will continue to stand arm-in-arm with our Adult Educators and their students but, it was nice to spend a couple hours reflecting on these special humans.

No one is getting left behind this time.

Since the murders of Renee Good and Alex Pretti in Minneapolis, employees of the United States Federal government have killed no fewer than five more of our neighbors under the guise of “Immigration Enforcement.”

Their names are:

Dr. Linda Davis in Savannah, Georgia
Nurul Amin Shah Alam in Buffalo, New York
Daphy Michel in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston, Texas
Joan Sebastián Durán Guerrero in Biddeford, Maine

They all deserve to be with their loved ones today. We grieve with the families and communities who knew them. Every one of them was precious. No one deserves to be summarily executed at the hands of law enforcement.

The Minneapolis Federation of Educators, Local 59 stands in solidarity with everyone working to protect our neighbors across this country.

Solidarity is the solution.
