MFE 59 - Minneapolis Federation of Educators

Congratulations to our wonderful retirees!

Last Friday we held our annual party for educators who have made the leap into the next chapter of their lives. After decades of service to this community it was wonderful to get together, share stories and break bread.

In the midst of all of our work, it’s important to take a moment to celebrate these moments.

Closures are not inevitable.

The School Board can and should stop them.

Contact your school board member and remind them that they hold the power and that their constituents do not want schools closed.

Find your board member at boardfinder.mpschools.org

North Side parents, staff tell Minneapolis Public Schools leaders that they want district plans to prioritize opportunity and stability for their children.

As the temperatures begin to drop (they’re going to do that, we promise) the election season is heating up!

In partnership with Education Minnesota we’re working to make sure that every member of our union and as many members of our community as possible get out to vote for our endorsed candidates up and down the ballot.

There are lots of events planned through the month of October and we’d love to see folks there!

Together, we can make sure that every Minnesotan’s voice is heard.

Neither rain nor sleet nor gloom of night stays this community from standing up for ourselves.

Now, we hope that our siblings over at the NALC will pardon the invocation of the postal service creed but, last night over 500 union members, families and caretakers showed that the rain never bothered us anyway!

What DOES bother us are the proposed plans that were laid out by Minneapolis Public Schools administration earlier this month to close over a dozen of our beloved neighborhood schools.

Last night we heard from families who would be impacted by the closures, students, and educators. Everyone is calling on the elected school board to delay the vote.

Concerned members and community are encouraged to join the upcoming pathway specific listening sessions hosted by MPS to voice your frustrations with the proposed plans.

The dates are as follows:

September 30 - Camden High School
October 1 - Washburn High School
October 2 - Edison High School
October 6 - South High School
October 7 - North High School
October 8 - Southwest High School
Octobre 9 - Roosevelt High School

All the times are 6:00-730PM. Childcare and translation into Spanish, Somali, and Hmong will be available for those that need it.

Together, we can stop these closures and get back to building the destination district that Minneapolis deserves.
