Jane Goodall (April 3, 1934 - October 1, 2025), whose lifelong work as a primatologist helped broaden the world’s understanding of animal behavior and emotions, died on this day, one year ago. She was 91.

Her field studies with chimpanzees not only broke barriers for women and changed the way scientists study animals, but documented emotions and personality traits within these primates that blurred the line between humans and the animal kingdom.

"Come, little leaves," said the wind one day,
"Come o'er the meadows with me and play;
Put on your dresses of red and gold, For summer is gone and the days grow cold."
Soon as the leaves heard the wind's loud call, Down they came fluttering, one and all;
