Last week, MPHA residents joined Sholom for a practical discussion on technology! Residents learned about accessible tools for using smartphones and computers and had a chance to ask questions about the challenges they face with technology today. This presentation is part of MPHA, MHRC, and YMCA of the North’s partnership to bring weekly exercise classes, educational presentations, and fun activities to residents.

Congratulations, Korean Service Center (KSC) team, on 35 years of serving the community! Last month, MPHA staff joined KSC to celebrate this major milestone. 🌟 The Korean Service Center helps MPHA residents age in place at MPHA’s Cedar High Apartments by providing culturally responsive, holistic support. For many MPHA residents, KSC staff have become like family. They provide meals, transportation, personal care, and companionship while treating every resident with dignity and respect.

On October 13, 14, and 15, MPHA will open its waitlist for the new state-funded housing voucher program, Bring it Home (BIH), for the first time. Modeled after the federal Housing Choice Voucher program, Minnesota Housing’s BIH program provides rental assistance to low-income Minnesota families. The agency anticipates adding as many as 1,500 households to the BIH waitlist during the three-day application window. This will be the first time MPHA has accepted public applications for any tenant-based housing assistance voucher since 2019.

To be eligible for the BIH program, applicants must live in Minnesota, pay more than 30 percent of their household income towards rent, and not currently be served by a federally funded Section 8 program. Additionally, applicants must be willing to live in Minneapolis, as MPHA’s BIH vouchers cannot be used elsewhere.

After seeing her apartment’s increasing rent putting a strain on the family’s budget, Dena Broughton moved her family into public housing this year. With her family settled in their new housing and her daughter starting school, Dena had the time to dedicate to taking on a career training program. And earlier this month, Dena completed the Twin Cities RISE! (TCR!) career training program through MPHA’s Pathways to Success partnership—the partnership’s first second generation participant. 🌟

Since 2023, the Pathways to Success program has helped connect MPHA family housing residents with career and personal development resources. In partnership with TCR, the program aims to help MPHA family housing residents gain meaningful employment and/or advance in their career.

For Dena’s mother, Dalerice, seeing her daughter complete the TCR training is a full-circle moment. Four and a half years ago, Dalerice completed the same training, helping launch her own career with MPHA.

Earlier this week, MPHA’s Director of HCV Brandon Crow joined Alliance Housing Inc. to celebrate the groundbreaking of 2116 Nicollet! This new building in the Whittier neighborhood includes 54 affordable family housing units, with 11 being supported by MPHA project-based vouchers.

This housing development is an example of how MPHA directly supports deeply affordable housing in Minneapolis beyond its own ~6,000 units. Since 2019, MPHA project-based vouchers have accounted for more than half of all deeply affordable housing built in Minneapolis. And MPHA is committed to this important work, with the goal of helping produce at least 150 new deeply affordable homes in Minneapolis a year.

Beyond the 11 project-based vouchers, MPHA is also supporting the project with sponsor-based awards to support 24 studio units. These sponsor-based awards bring an additional form of financial assistance to the project, offering Alliance Housing flexibility to use funds in a way they deem best for residents.
