On 28 July 1755 Governor Charles Lawrence and his Nova Scotia Council unanimously agreed to deport the entire Acadian population of Nova Scotia. This led to the upheaval and suffering of over 14,000 Acadians and the eventual deportation of over 11,000. Many of our Acadian ancestors suffered over three decades in unknown lands as unwanted intruders. Their faith, resilience and strong commitment to their immediate and extended families and their Acadian heritage and culture, held them together as an Acadian nation and today we still survive.

On 9 December 2003 Queen Elizabeth II issued the Royal Proclamation of 2003 in which she acknowledged the sufferings of the Acadians and announced that 28 July would be a solemn day of remembrance for the Acadian resilience, heritage and culture. Today, Acadians throughout the world celebrate 28 July as the Acadian Day of Commemoration of Le Grand Dérangement.

A team of Acadian and world leaders led by Lafayette attorney and Acadian historian Warren Perrin worked for over 15 years preparing the legal documentation and developing the pathway to provide it to the Queen prior to her issuing the Royal Proclamation. We are thankful to them and to the Queen for this special day of Acadian remembrance.
