Alliance Housing fills a critical niche in Minneapolis’ affordable housing marketplace. Our units are some of the most affordable – a Single Room Occupancy (SRO) room, where a resident shares a bathroom and kitchen, costs as little as $380 per month. Our largest apartments, with 3 bedrooms, cost as low as $1010 per month. A recent study by the National Low Income Housing Coalition analyzed how man

y hours a minimum wage worker would have to work to afford an average cost 2-bedroom apartment. In MN, it was 101 hours per week – we know that is not sustainable for many families. With support from donors, we’re able to keep rents affordable to low wage workers. With Alliance, a single minimum wage worker would have to work 25 hours per week to afford a room and 65 hours per week to afford a 2-bedroom unit. This is well below the averages and manageable for two less than full-time wage earners in a family. We rent to tenants that other landlords turn down because of their low income or poor rental and criminal histories. Without stable housing, these individuals are unable to maintain a job, get their children to school every day, or manage their health. Many of our tenants are low wage and seasonal workers, leaving them with insufficient income to afford market rent apartments. We provide support and flexibility so our tenants can maintain their housing. Alliance Housing has developed 315 housing units, all in Minneapolis.

- 81 units are scattered among 22 properties. Alliance owns and manages the properties.
- 234 units are in four apartment buildings. Alliance is the owner and contracts with an independent property manager.
- 112 units are under development in two buildings, both in South Minneapolis.

Kyle Garden Square is more than an apartment building, it's designed to offer stability and a supportive community for residents who have experienced homelessness or long-term housing insecurity.

For people like Aminat, who spent years moving between shelters and unsafe situations, moving in marks the start of a new chapter.

We're so grateful to do this work alongside Touchstone Mental Health and Property Solutions & Services, Inc. Stories like Aminat's are a reminder of how much we can accomplish when we work together to make housing happen.

Yesterday, Alliance and Touchstone Mental Health celebrated the grand opening of Kyle Garden Square. Since opening its doors last fall, the building has reached full occupancy, providing 59 homes for individuals transitioning out of homelessness.

We’re grateful to our speakers: Jessie Hendel, Alliance Executive Director; Pat Parker, Kyle Garden Square resident; Mayor Jacob Frey; Commissioner Jennifer Ho from Minnesota Housing; Touchstone CEO Ellie Skelton; Angela Conley Hennepin County Commissioner District 4; and Dominic Mitchell, Deputy Executive Director of Minneapolis Public Housing Authority. Their remarks were a reminder of the many partners it takes to bring affordable housing and adaptive reuse projects like Kyle Garden Square to life, and what is possible when we work together.

Thank you to everyone who attended, and a special thank you to the Kyle Garden Square residents for welcoming us into their home.

As Commissioner Conley shared in her remarks, it is always a beautiful day to celebrate the grand opening for housing like Kyle Garden Square.
