In May, we provided fresh, nutritious food to 1,241 households; that added up to 2,353 children, 2,204 adults and 474 seniors. We continue to see increased demand, because among those households served, 123 of them were visiting Minnehaha Food Shelf for the first time. Our volunteers are able to distribute meat, fish, poultry, dairy products, fruits, vegetables and pantry staples because of the generous support of people like you. It's easy to donate with a credit card or debit card via our convenient and secure PayPal portal. Donate here: https://bit.ly/3JCzVDT. Your gift is tax deductible as allowed by law. Thank you!

Three cheers to George Gallagher! More than 75 well-wishers gathered on Saturday to celebrate George and his countless accomplishments during his long and impressive tenure as general manager of Minnehaha Food Shelf.

We were fortunate to enjoy a picture-perfect spring afternoon on the beautiful south lawn outside Minnehaha United Methodist church, where we marked George's retirement with food and music; our thanks to a dozen volunteer bakers, and to the song stylings of Van Nixon and bagpiper extraordinaire Michael Redmond.

We also surprised George with a well-deserved honor. Emcee Dean Ammerman read the following proclamation:

"At its meeting last week, the board of directors of Minnehaha Food Shelf approved the following declaration:

WHEREAS George Gallagher has served as our visionary leader for the past 17 years; and,

WHEREAS he has built Minnehaha Food Shelf to be the respected food provider that it is today; and,

WHEREAS he has built a volunteer base that is the envy of other food shelves and provided said volunteers with many illustrious words of wisdom;

THEREFORE, we hereby name our pantry the GEORGE GALLAGHER FOOD PANTRY in his honor."

Congratulations, George, and we hope you enjoy your well-deserved retirement. (Thanks to photographer Leslie Plesser of shuttersmack.com).

We're happy to report that, once again, the nation's largest single-day food drive yielded a major donation to Minnehaha Food Shelf. The 34th-annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive took place on Saturday, May 9. Members of the National Association of Letter Carriers (which is a union of U.S. Postal Service employees) volunteered to collect nonperishable food items at households on their delivery routes. The drive yielded a ton — specifically, 2,019 pounds — of much-needed and much-appreciated canned goods, pasta, rice, breakfast cereals and more. "We could not have processed and sorted all of these thousands of items without a group of incredible volunteers who took time out of their busy weekend to help out on Saturday," said general manager Britt Reuter. "We owe a big thanks to everyone who pitched in." Board chair Louise Robinson agreed. "Everything had to be checked for expiration dates, weighed and sorted onto rolling shelves for distribution on Tuesday," she said. "And it all went so smoothly because Britt had organized it so well in advance." (Pictured: Some of the Saturday volunteer crew).

This is what 252 mini watermelons looks like. Every Tuesday, we are able to provide fresh and nutritious fruits and vegetables (along with meats, poultry, dairy products, eggs, bread, canned goods and other staples) thanks to the generous support of people like you. In April, we served 1,168 households. That includes 2,179 children, 2,110 adults (ages 18 to 64) and 462 seniors (ages 65 and older). Help us fight food insecurity in our south Minneapolis neighborhood. It's easy to donate with a credit card or debit card via our convenient and secure PayPal portal. Meet Britt Reuter, our new general manager.

Q: What's your 60-second biography?

A: I'm a licensed nutritionist, and I have a passion for food accessibility, health equity and community building. I've been in private practice for 10 years, and I'm excited to serve the south Minneapolis community at Minnehaha Food Shelf.

Q: Do you live in the neighborhood?

A: I do, I'm in Keewaydin. That was a huge draw, to be able to ride my bike or walk here. I've been in Minneapolis for two years now. I grew up in Stillwater, and I've lived in a handful of places, including eastern Wisconsin and Massachusetts. Every other place has been, 'It's good, we like it, we'll be here for a little while,' but as soon as my partner and I moved into our house in Minneapolis, we thought, 'We are going to be here forever.'

Q: What draws you to working at a food shelf?

A: The biggest part is just how food access is a big predictor of health. You can't improve your health if you're not eating enough, you can't improve your diet if you're not eating enough. It all starts with eating enough.

Q: You've been on the job for a few weeks. How's it going?

A: My first order of business has been getting acquainted with how things currently operate. I'm learning a lot from the volunteers. Everyone here seems to know how to organize and operate, which has been hugely helpful for me.

Q: Have you had any surprises?

A: To me it has been learning that all of the volunteers are self-starters. It was nice to arrive here on Day One and not feel that everyone was looking at me and asking, 'What do I do?' That was a nightmare I had, because I don't know what to do, I just got here [laughs]. It has been so nice that people come in and roll up their sleeves. They're ready to serve, they have a good attitude and they want to be here. They're in community with one another, but I also see how well they interact with clients, and all of that has been really heartening. I feel like, if I wasn't present, it would still continue to run, which in my opinion is a really nice feeling.

Q: What's next?

A: We'll be working collaboratively to make improvements. I think a lot of people have ideas, and they've been looking for an outlet to share them, so I'm trying to be as receptive and open as I can to feedback, and to new ways of doing things. Having operations go smoothly enables the clients to have a better experience, and that enables us to serve even more people. I think that that's always the goal, to do what we do well, do it efficiently and find opportunities to grow, because the need is growing.

Our fundraising drive during the 45th-annual Minnesota FoodShare March Campaign was an enormous success.

Here's the backstory: An anonymous donor offered to match all March donations up to $5,000, with the goal of raising an additional $5,000 by the end of the month.

Thanks to the generosity of more than 200 donors, we significantly surpassed that goal, raising $22,667.45. Add the anonymous donor's matching pledge of $5,000, and the campaign reached a grand total of $27,667.45.

These donations will help fight food insecurity in our south Minneapolis neighborhood, and we're grateful. Thank you!

A toast to George Gallagher! After nearly 20 years as Minnehaha Food Shelf's general manager, our friend and fearless leader has retired. On the last Tuesday in March, several dozen volunteers gathered to celebrate George and his extraordinary legacy, sharing a few songs and enjoying a delicious potluck lunch. (George was recovering from a medical procedure that required him to wear his rock star sunglasses). A great time was had by all. To quote those gathered at the event: "Here's to George, hip, hip, hooray!"

In March we served an average of 310 households per week, which is up from 289 households per week in March 2025, and 266 households per week in March 2024. That's a 17 percent increase in demand for our services over this 24-month period. Here are some other March figures: We served 6,292 individuals. That breaks down to 2,878 adults (ages 18 to 64), 566 seniors (ages 65 and older) and 2,850 children; nearly half of the people that we served are under the age of 18. We couldn't do this without your generous support. Thank you.

Thank you, Wedge Co-ops! Minnehaha Food Shelf was the March beneficiary of the stores' monthly Change Matters program, where shoppers are asked at checkout if they would like to "round up" their purchases to the next dollar.

And, wow, in March, did they ever, because over 31 days, registers at the Wedge's two stores gathered $10, 252.66. In addition, we received $268.10 from the sale of T-shirts, and Jinx Tea donated $63.87, which is 10 percent of their March sales at the Wedge.

The grand total: $10,584.63.

We are so grateful to the Wedge and its generous shoppers for their commitment to fighting food insecurity in our south Minneapolis neighborhood. Visit the Wedge's two Minneapolis locations: 2105 Lyndale Avenue South (open 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily) and 3815 Sunnyside Avenue (open 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily), and be sure to "round up" for the April focus of the Change Matters program: Urban Roots, a youth agricultural/culinary project on St. Paul's East Side.
