CARL OLTVEDT | IN FOCUS Now – JULY 4, 2026

Lowry Hill Gallery announces In Focus, an exhibition of drawings by Carl Oltvedt. Oltvedt will give an artist talk at 4pm on Saturday, June 27.

Carl Oltvedt works full-time as an artist in a variety of painting and drawing media. He retired from Minnesota State University Moorhead in 2015, where he was a Professor in the School of Art. He maintains a studio at the California Building . His paintings and drawings are included in numerous public, corporate, and private collections, including Mia, Minnesota Museum of American Art, Plains Art Museum, Fargo, ND, Rourke Art Gallery & Museum, Moorhead, MN, and the North Dakota Museum of Art, Grand Forks, ND.

Oltvedt’s continued interest in the form and behavior of egrets, herons, sandhill cranes, and gulls is the subject of this exhibition. These eight drawings are based on the artist’s own thousands of photographs, taken as Oltvedt follows the migratory seasons of these species in Minnesota. While a drawing originates from a photograph, the artist’s skilled drawing is of primary importance in the work.

Paintings by Sam Haines
June 12th and 13th

Showing at the Flux Arts Building
The show is free and open to the public.

Sam Haines is a Midwestern artist. Growing up in a small town, he developed an early connection to worn textures, quiet moments, and the kind of imagery that sticks with you long after it’s passed—back roads, hand-made signs, and the beauty found in everyday life.

The Function “Block Party” is a celebration of what makes our city so special – the resolve and creativity of our neighbors. Now more than ever it is important to come together to connect, reflect, process, and restore ourselves. All in all, this day is going to be a joyful expression of our love for the place we live, knowing that joy is an essential act of resistance and resilience.

For the past two years Public Functionary has hosted The Function as a ticketed event to raise funds to support PF’s programming. In light of how this year started for residents of the Twin Cities, entry to The Function “Block Party” will be offered on a sliding scale (0-$100). By removing the financial barrier to entry we hope to make The Function more accessible to the creative community and our neighbors in Northeast Minneapolis and beyond.

To register buy a ticket to this event (sliding scale $0-$100)

During the rush and intensity of Art-A-Whirl®, many visitors entering the quiet of the Arts District Welcome Center found themselves unexpectedly pulled into the story of how Minneapolis’ contemporary art scene gradually shifted from the Warehouse District of the 1980s and 1990s to the now-thriving Northeast Minneapolis Arts District.

The exhibit, “Origins: How the Minneapolis Arts Spotlight Shifted from Downtown to Northeast,” traces decades of artist-run spaces, galleries, studios, events, and communities that helped shape the city’s cultural landscape.

“A:gajë:gwah dësa’nigöëwë:nye:’ (i hope it will stir your mind)” Walker Art Center, ends July 5, 2026.

The current visual installation designed by Rosy Simas (Seneca Nation of Indians, Heron Clan) is a culmination of her two-year Walker Art Center Residency. Per Rosy Simas Danse website, A:gajë:gwah dësa’nigöëwë:nye:’ (i hope it will stir your mind) foregrounds the Seneca notion of a “good mind.” The space is intended for contemplation and reflection. Oak benches allow the viewer to sit and spend as much time as they want within the room.

The cross-disciplinary exhibit occupies an entire gallery. The work includes ambient sounds gathered from Onondowa’ga lands by the artist, Simas’s voice speaking in Onöndowa’ga Gawë:nö, moving images, and sculpture in a meditative space. Physical materials, some of which were sourced from Onöndowa’ga lands, include salt, cornhusks, cornhusk bottles, deerskin lace, and basswood cordage. An oval light pool is central to the space, with the hanging twined corn husk bottles above catching the changing light. The sound, physical materials, light and voice in the hushed environment provide a multisensory art experience that takes time to absorb.

Simas’ residency included an original dance performance performed by Rosy Simas Danse at the Walker Art Center in mid-May. Community workshops hosted by the Walker over the course of the exhibit focused on themes from the work.

EVERYTHING IS OTHERED

New sculptures by Jeffrey Haddorff and paintings by Janet Lobberecht

Exhibition runs through now- July 3rd.

Jeffrey Haddorff's recent work: sometimes botanical, sometimes anatomical, sometimes architectural, always interested in the physicality of working with clay, the dialog between maker and material, color, surface, scale, the work being arecord of the action in the studio. https://jeffreyhaddorff.com/home.html

Janet Lobberecht's recent paintings and multimedia work are evidence of prior and recent creations coalescing, introducing a continual wave of discovery that oscillates between the past, present, and future. As we fuse in and out of many forms and spaces, her work invites us to question what "human" will mean in the future. .and.deviations

Why is Public Works and the City trying to destroy Quincy Street?

The battle about Quincy Street is at an inflection point. Public Works narratives have changed multiple times over the past two years. Multiple designs have been proposed, all of which have been rejected by the Logan Park Industrial community, artists, building, and business owners.

The latest friction centers on the Right-of-Way on the west side of Quincy Street, which means that, from the buildings out into the street, 2/3rds is private property. The remaining ⅓ is the public right of way, meaning that the ⅓ foot portion is public property, and private businesses should not be able to use it as their own. When cars park perpendicular to the building, they stick out into the public right-of-way. City planners want to rectify this situation, stating consistency is their goal, no matter the cost to businesses.

Early on in this saga, the City’s curb manager stated that future businesses were more important than current ones, and that this is how the City must think about the area. The posture of the Public Works has not changed since the city official made this statement.

Ultimately, the right-of-way concept for Quincy Street is a made-up issue to fit the narrative they want to meet. Coming 92 years later and saying this is a top priority for the City, consistent with their street development, shows single-minded blindness to culturally significant areas.

Ashley Templeton, the Marketing and Arts & Culture Program Manager for the Anacostia Business Improvement District in Washington DC, invited Board President Jennifer Young and Board Chair Josh Blanc to attend the May 13th, 2026 Arts & Economic Impact Solutions Summit, a high-level economic forum exploring how communities can build successful, self-sustaining creative business hubs. The Forum was held in Downtown Anacostia – DC’s official Arts & Culture District, known as ART to GO-GO

The Summit was full of highly credentialed individuals, including economists, bankers, developers, art organizations, business owners, poets, multimedia artists, musicians, economic development planners, and community members. We were very impressed with their highly engaged collection of speakers and audience members. Anicosta Executive Director Kristina Noell and Lee Davenport, Director of Community Development, US Ignites, ran the Summit. The topics and discussions for each panel were: how do they build creative business hubs that are economically strong, culturally vibrant, and sustainable over time?
