The mission of the Somali Medical Laboratory Association (SOMLA) is to unite Somali medical laboratory professionals so that they can have an opportunity to share information, discuss and raise health issues in the Somali communities in both the United States and Somalia, and to provide charitable support for health facilities in Somalia. Many Somalis, whether in the United States or Somalia, are
unfamiliar with the work of medical laboratory technicians, and are unaware of the benefits to their health that “lab work” can provide. SOMLA will help Somali individuals understand their options in the health-care setting, and learn how to be strong health-care advocates. SOMLA will also organize clinics where patients without means can access quality lab care, and learn about the meaning of the results. By demystifying this aspect of health care, SOMLA hopes to contribute to an overall improvement in the health of the Somali community. Finally, SOMLA recognizes the fragile state of health care in Somalia itself, and will raise funds, and seek donated supplies and equipment, to support stronger health care in Somalia, particularly to expand through charitable projects Somalia’s capacity for delivering this important component of health care to its people.
