Before Memorial Day became a national holiday, one of the earliest commemorations is believed to have been organized by formerly enslaved Black Americans in Charleston, South Carolina in 1865.
After discovering that Union soldiers had been buried in a mass grave without proper honor, they came together to give them dignified burials and create a memorial site filled with flowers, prayer, hymns, and remembrance.
At its core, Memorial Day began with people choosing to honor humanity, sacrifice, dignity, and community.
Today, we remember all the men and women who gave their lives in service to this country, and we reflect on the importance of continuing to build communities rooted in compassion, restoration, and care for one another.
May we never forget the power of honoring people with dignity.
