The Report to Members is officially out! Read all about our third featured story, Celebrating 25 Years with a New Space and Renewed Purpose!

As MACC celebrates its 25th anniversary, we're embarking on a new chapter marked by a new strategic framework AND fresh new digs! 25 years ago our journey began downtown at 414 South 8th street. At that time MACC Member The Family Partnership generously shared their space to incubate the newly-created MACC organization. This "childhood home" was where our first dedicated staff members worked, helping to grow the network.

Over the years, MACC evolved and grew. Slowly we took over the first floor, and then eventually the 2nd floor too! Our old space, while full of memories, also had a growing list of maintenance challenges and no longer fit our hybrid workforce.

We needed a space that was not only accessible and member-friendly, but also inviting and functional. It needed better parking, flexible meeting spaces, modern technology, and a central location for our geographically diverse network. It was a tall order, but our staff Space Planning Committee took on the challenge.

Meet our second panelist: Katie Vickery!

Kate is a Program Officer at HFJ, facilitating community-led grantmaking programs and building deep relationships with our grantee partners. She comes to Headwaters with a long history in non-profits, having worked in land conservation, immigrant rights, cooperatives, criminal justice, community development, and voting rights. Her love for the people driving community change has led her to Headwaters, where she works to resource organizations that she knows are systematically under-resourced. Kate is a midwestern-southerner, with roots in Michigan, Wisconsin, Texas and Alabama. She loves hosting people around her table, eating delicious food, and making pie, which she believes is the perfect breakfast. She raises two young people with her partner, and lives in South Minneapolis near Lake Nokomis. She practices community building with her neighbors and is deeply invested in the work of healing white culture so that we all may be free.

MACC network we have something very special to bring to you. Our 2023 Annual Report is here! Stay tuned for the official launch but take peek inside of what's to come as we count down!

Here's the story of the genesis of our Strategic Framework!

Celebrating 25 Years: A Journey of Renewal and Transformation
Since our founding 25 years ago MACC has continuously evolved to meet the changing needs of our network.
The Pandemic showed the vital role nonprofits play in helping our communities reclaim the resources they need to weather storms and build connection, wellbeing, and power. The Pandemic also crystalized the need for our network to challenge the status quo and take on the systemic barriers blocking meaningful, lasting change in our sector.
We needed a strong foundation to build on and create momentum for the years of deep systems work ahead. The journey to our new Strategic Framework took nearly two years and was grounded in continuous engagement with our staff, network, and key sector partners.
Our new Mission, Vision, and Commitment to IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility) represent a shared agreement between MACC and our network about what we value and the change we're working toward. Our Strategic Framework anchored by our two priorities, Systems Change and IDEA, lays out a path for how we get there.

Links to the site with all of the stories will be in the comments section when we launch so stay tuned!

Minnesota is getting more privacy rights for web users to protect their data from data brokers to protect against advertising. These are the kind of advancements we want to see as Data Justice continues to be a prevalent topic within the nonprofit sector.
“When Minnesotans engage with tech platforms, they deserve to know what data is being collected, where it is being stored, whether it is secure, and whether their data is being sold."

Our non-profit sector takes a lot of influence from the corporate world that very often pushes forth inequity and challenges for growth. Many of these issues come from a disconnect between organizations and boards and funders within our sector.

"A 2015 Stanford Business School study found that board directors often lack the skills, experience, and knowledge about the communities served, as well as a solid understanding of their organization’s mission and strategy to address the communities’ needs…oversight and accountability are important, but boards rarely have enough insight into an organization’s daily operations to handle these duties effectively."

These issues stand strong today and hinder growth for organizations in the non-profit sector.
Corporate influence in the nonprofit world is far from altruistic and we're being set back by those systems in place. More work needs to be done to embrace alternative structures in our sector so our system work for and with the people.
