Session 4 – Resilience by Design: From Process to Practice by Leah Wirgau, Sr. Sustainability Specialist, HGA and Patrick Cipriano, Design Coordinator, HGA

Climate change is increasingly impacting our communities, ecosystems, and economies, and site design can play a key role in resilient solution-making. To that end, design, engineering, and planning professionals have the power to implement resilient strategies that bolster project goals and support vulnerable populations. Highlighting a collaboration between an architecture-engineering firm and the University of Minnesota’s Climate Adaptation Partnership, presenters will walk through a three-part resilience planning process. Tools and resources for gathering climate data, and best practices for identifying hazards, assessing risk, and planning strategies will be covered. A local project example will be given to demonstrate this process.

Leah Wirgau, LFA, SITES AP, MN Master Naturalist, Sr. Sustainability Specialist, HGA

As a member of HGA’s Sustainability team, Leah is an expert in the Minnesota B3, SITES, Living Building Challenge, and WELL Health-Safety rating systems. She has experience implementing strategies related to climate resilience, energy reduction, embodied carbon, and material health. Her knowledge in deep green building and site practices guides related research and education, and supports industry-leading projects, as well as policies.

Patrick Cipriano, LFA, LEED GA, Design Coordinator, HGA

Patrick is an emerging professional working at the intersection of architecture and resilience to integrate research into practice on a day-to-day project level approach. Patrick has over five years of research and professional experience in resilience that includes scenario planning, climate projection data, biophilic design, and energy modeling. Research experience has included previous and active collaborations with the University of Minnesota Climate Adaptation Partnership (MCAP), and the University of Minnesota Center for Sustainable Building Research (CSBR).

Session 3 – Advancing Site Sustainability Through Minnesota’s Evolving B3 Framework

Moderated by Lydia Major, Landscape Architecture and Planning Leader, LHB

Panelist 1: Matt Tierney, Research Fellow at University of Minnesota Center for Sustainable Building Research

Panelist 2: Brit Erenler, PLA, Senior Associate, Damon Farber

Panelist 3: Marcie Weslock, PE, LEED AP, President/Principal Engineer, Élan Design Lab, Inc.

The State of Minnesota’s B3 (Buildings, Benchmarks, and Beyond) programs and tools support the creation of high-performing, sustainable sites and buildings by establishing clear, project-specific performance requirements starting with pre-design, guiding teams through effective and achievable sustainability strategies throughout design, and ensuring long-term accountability through post-occupancy performance tracking. This panel session will highlight recent updates to the B3 Site and Water Guidelines and feature design team representatives who will share insights, challenges, and strategies from their work on B3 projects. Attendees will leave with practical, adaptable takeaways for enhancing water efficiency, soil health, vegetation resilience, and habitat sustainability—whether or not they formally follow B3 Guidelines.

ASLA MN Ed Symposium Speaker Highlight:
Chad Giblin, Arborist, Founder of Trees & Me, LLC

Chad will be leading Session 1: Promoting Tree Vitality and Survival Using Life Stage as a Guiding Principle

Using a case study approach, we’ll explore different opportunities to promote tree vitality from species selection and planting to thoughtful care of mature trees. Developmental pruning as a tool to promote tree preservation will be discussed and contrasted with pruning of mature trees. In many cases conventional approaches to mature tree care may lead to accelerated decline of trees, particularly those damaged by, or recovering from construction activities. Case studies will be presented along with a necessary shift in expectations to better align tree care practices with tree life stage.

Chad Giblin is an arborist and founder of Trees & Me LLC, which include tree care and consulting companies based in Saint Paul, MN. He is also an Adjunct Professor of Applied Arboriculture at Hennepin Technical College. Prior to his private practice, Chad worked at the University of Minnesota for 25 years in various teaching, outreach, and research roles in horticulture and urban forestry. Chad’s work is focused on increasing awareness and access to natural resources through memorable, hands-on outdoor experiences, conducting workshops and training, delivering high-quality tree care, and implementing systems of tree preservation.

ASLA MN is looking forward to hosting our 2026 Education Symposium, on Friday June 5 at the American Swedish Institute. We are pleased to introduce our Keynote Speaker David Rubin, Founding Principal of DAVID RUBIN_Land Collective. His session is entitled The Broad Horizon View. A short description follows.

Landscapes are a reflection of culture – they represent their creators, their personal identity or the people they were designed for. They are an extension of the community, the state, and the country. As such, they are inherently political gestures, from front porch gardens to civic parks and plazas, they are inherently cultural representations. These landscapes are written to be read and have the prospect of positively informing all of us.

Red Sands Sports Park by received a People’s Choice award!

The Red Sands Sports Park transforms 7,700 acres of desert south of Riyadh into a world-class cycling and outdoor sports destination. The design centers on the Najdi flower, a traditional six-petaled geometric figure scaled to metropolitan dimensions as a 9-mile professional cycling loop visible from every plane landing in Riyadh. All 31 miles of paths are lit for nighttime riding, with midnight races running through summer. Over half the site is dedicated to ecological restoration using experimental dune reconstruction grounded in historic wind patterns. The park holds equestrian trails, hiking paths, and cross-country biking across the restored landscape.

In the category of Unbuilt Works, the JD Rivers’ Children’s Garden by received a merit award!

Youth employment and career growth, healthy communities and education are the priorities of the JD Rivers’ Children’s Garden. Growing on the success of the existing youth-run garden, the Long-Range Plan proposes an expanded garden campus in support of these goals and proposes a framework for successful agricultural and cultural systems. The expanded campus features an Educational Center, Greenhouse, Hoophouse, water-harvesting system and small farm animal enclosure, where teen workers learn job skills that provide healthy food for their communities. The plan creates capacity for agricultural growth, and investment in Minneapolis’ youth as they grow their career skills and community’s health.

In the category of Unbuilt Works, the Gateway Plaza by received a merit award!

Gateway Plaza is a conceptual urban park designed to revitalize downtown Minneapolis by transforming a former parking lot and vehicular corridor into a vibrant, year-round civic destination. Located in the historic Gateway District, the plaza restores a long-lost public gathering place through flexible programming, inclusive design, and resilient green infrastructure. Built atop nearly four acres of structured green roof, the park integrates active lawns, interactive water features, native landscapes, and cultural elements that reflect the city’s history and seasons. Gateway Plaza supports daily use, seasonal events, and large civic gatherings, reconnecting people, places, and community at the heart of downtown.

Maple Grove Veterans Memorial by took home a merit award in the category of Small Budget, Big Impact!

The Maple Grove Veterans Memorial is a prominent civic space designed to honor local men and women who served in the U.S. Military. Located at the gateway to a community park, it is intended to be part of everyday life rather than secluded. The design balances areas for large ceremonial gatherings with intimate spaces for quiet, personal reflection. It uniquely emphasizes local stories of sacrifice gathered directly from community members and veterans. Key features include accessible pathways, flagpoles, and striking weathering steel panels listing conflicts and veteran names, which are illuminated at night as a beacon of remembrance.
