April is Alcohol Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness about alcohol use disorder, reduce stigma, and highlight the importance of access to quality care.

Credentialed professionals and Clinical Supervisors play a vital role in ensuring services are ethical, evidence-informed, and recovery-oriented.

This month, we recognize the professionals who strengthen systems of care and protect the public every day.

The Minnesota Certification Board is thrilled to inform you that we have launched a new 6 hour ethics training course! This course explores the principles of the Minnesota Certification Board (MCB) Ethical Code of Conduct for Peer Recovery Specialists, with realistic examples designed to enhance participant understanding.

“The Pathways of Ethics for Peers’ Sake”

Course Listings and Descriptions:

Session One: Personal Wellness and Recovery and Sharing My Lived Experience
This session establishes the MCB Ethical Code of Conduct as a guiding framework for Peer Recovery Specialists. It emphasizes two key principles: the ethical obligation for personal wellness and recovery, and the responsible sharing of one's lived experience. 1 CEU

Session Two: Honoring Personal Recovery Pathways and Confidentiality
This session focuses on the intersection of two critical principles: honoring a peer’s chosen pathway and maintaining confidentiality to preserve trust, as well as how they can be applied to real-life situations. 1 CEU

Session Three: Non-Discrimination and Integrity
This session explores how non-discrimination involves actively recognizing our biases to provide fair support to everyone. It then connects to the principle of integrity, which requires professional accountability to address our mistakes and maintain the trust placed in us, and how to apply this principle to real-life situations. 1 CEU

Session Four: Conduct
This session is an in-depth examination of professional conduct. It emphasizes the importance of setting clear boundaries that separate peer support relationships from personal friendships, financial ties, and other roles. It also explains why maintaining clear, consistent, and ethical behavior is essential for a safe and effective peer recovery support relationship. 1 CEU

Session Five: Conflict of Interest and Scope of Practice
This session emphasizes that the role of a Certified Peer Recovery Specialist (CPRS) requires strict adherence to two boundaries: Conflict of Interest, which means the CPRS must prioritize the peer's benefit over personal gain, and Scope of Practice. Respecting these boundaries ensures the integrity and safety of peer relationships. 1 CEU

Session Six: Personal Development and Professional Standards
This session establishes that the role of a Certified Peer Recovery Specialist is not static; it is an obligation to continuous professional growth and absolute adherence to standards. Prioritizing personal development through continuous education and self-reflection is essential for maintaining professional standards and preserving public trust in the peer recovery field. 1 CEU

Price per session: $10.00 (if purchased individually). NOTE: This course is part of a six-session series on Ethics. All six courses can be purchased together for $50, a savings of $10

Attention Minnesota LADC’s
-
If you’re currently credentialed with the Minnesota Certification Board (MCB), or you once were and let it lapse, it might be time to take a hard look at upgrading to the Alcohol & Drug Counselor Reciprocal – Minnesota (ADCR-MN).
For a lot of you in this field, career paths are shifting. More LADCs are moving into private practice, exploring telehealth, and working with clients who live across state lines.
Here’s the reality:
If you want to practice LADC counseling with clients in other states, you typically need to be licensed or credentialed in those states. And that’s where the ADCR-MN becomes a strategic advantage.
Because the ADCR-MN is based on IC&RC reciprocity, it can make cross-state credentialing far easier in jurisdictions that recognize the same credential. In other words: greater mobility, less red tape, and more opportunities.
A few reminders for those considering it:
• You can hold your ADC-MN and upgrade once you hit 6,000 hours of supervised experience.
• OR — if you already have 6,000 hours — you can apply directly for the ADCR-MN.
• Details and application info are here: https://www.mcboard.org/alcohol-drug-counselor/
Don’t limit yourself simply because you didn’t realize reciprocity was an option — or how much smoother it can make future career moves.
If you’re thinking about diversifying your practice, expanding across states, or opening a private practice, this is one upgrade that opens doors.
If you have questions about the process or whether it makes sense for your path, feel free to reach out to our staff at 763.434.9787.
