In Somalia, climate change impacts from droughts and floods pose the most severe hazards to the country. For the water sector, declining ground water levels drive up water prices and increase the likelihood of a conflict over water.

It is in Dhinowda area of Mudug region, the drought in the country, in addition to sand buried in the wells where they used to get water. It also ravaged the health center, mosque and other buildings in the area.
"What kind of world are we in? We have buried it and we have not left this world, nor have we reached the end," said a local elder, demanding water and medicine.
Dhinowda is 30 km south of Gara'ad.

The longer the drought lasts in Somaliland, the lower the groundwater level sinks. This has severe consequences for the people and their animals. Especially camels are resistant, yes. But they also suffer, have hardly anything to eat and drink and therefore give less milk. For the pastoralists, their camels are often still their only capital, which is why they take special care of them. Story for NZZ am Sonntag.

"If our animals die, we will die too". Somaliland is in the grip of drought, once again. Already 800000 of the 3.5 million inhabitants are affected, the number is increasing daily. Most of them are pastoralists, nomadic people. On assignment for NZZ am Sonntag.

May I introduce: Prosopis juliflora, the most dangerous tree in the world – at least according to the FAO. Where nothing else grows, only it grows. Originally from Mexico and the US, the invasive Prosopis is now overgrowing large parts of Somaliland, displacing native species, sucking the groundwater, cutting off pastoralists. It must be eradicated as quick as possible, many say. Others are convinced: the Prosopis could be the salvation from hunger and poverty - if only it is used properly. Last week I drove across Somaliland to find out what the prosopis ultimately is: plague or blessing? The story will soon be in the NZZ am Sonntag.
Now part two of the research begins, it's about hunger and drought again. But this time the focus is on the war against Ukraine. Together with NZZaS-Reporter Sacha Batthyany, I try to find out what effect this war has on the people of Somaliland, a country that is highly dependent on Ukrainian wheat in times of severe drought - and, incidentally, on Russian petrol as well. Stay tuned.

And again there is a severe drought in Somaliland and rain is far from being in sight. 800,000 of the 3.5 million people are already affected, most of them farmers and pastoralists in rural areas. Their most important income is their animals, goats, sheep and camels. But the animals hardly have anything to eat or drink since months. In need, the most poor farmers and pastoralists have to sell their animals. At the big market in Hargeisa, sheep and goats are sold for 60 dollars per animal, if business is good. Then they are shipped to Dubai where the traders sell them for 150 dollars. Some say all this is not even necessary, because there is enough animal feed in the country. If you only look closely. But more about that later. On assignment for NZZ am Sonntag.
