Disability etiquette is an important skill to develop to ensure people with disabilities are treated with dignity and respect. We compiled a handy list of best practices to implement in the workplace and beyond.
1) Introduce yourself like you would with anyone else and speak directly with the person. If you usually shake hands with someone new, offer the handshake and follow their lead if they prefer a different method.
2) Avoid intrusive questions. While some mean well, it is important to not bring up someone's disability and let the person bring it up themselves.
3) Avoid making assumptions about someone's capabilities and abilities. Lowering expectations for people with disabilities is not treating them equally and can lead to barriers to success.
4) Make access a priority. It is crucial to make people with disabilities feel welcome and fully included in the workplace. This is not limited to physical access to spaces, but also accessible communications. This can include ensuring media being sent out is accessible, having an interpreter for meetings or conferences, and including captions for videos.
At AccessAbility, our mission is to provide opportunities for employment and community inclusion for adults with disabilities. Thank you to AbilityOne for their partnership. It is with their support that we are able to further our mission and make an impact in our community.
