Is it time to have this conversation? Again?

THE WOMEN AND MONEY PROJECT IN 2016 asked a simple yet powerful question: what is the value of women’s lives, labor, and presence?

Through the theme “Women and Money,” artists explored the emotional landscapes surrounding wealth, scarcity, and power. Money is not only currency—it shapes identity, relationships, possibility, and belonging.
Yet much of what women give to the world exists outside the language of economics. Women nurture communities, weave relationships, sustain culture, and carry invisible networks of care. Like pollinators moving quietly through a landscape, they generate the vitality from which communities grow.
Still, the structures that define financial value rarely recognize these contributions.

Since the exhibition in 2016 10 years ago, I believe we have had significant backlash to all of the discussions that were raised at that time- at the time we did that exhibition at the UMN Department of Art & Katherine E. Nash Gallery we had no idea of the realities that existed and what was to come...2016 and beyond.

IAFA artist Meng Tang created this work many years ago, and it’s striking how the issue it addresses remains relevant today. It is so sad to hear that Speaker Hortman and her husband were assassinated a couple hours ago!

Russ White, arts writer, wrote this article for the University paper which talks about process. Stay tuned for a program at the end of March. The work is hanging in the Wilson Library on West Bank.

CAMILLE GAGE...a memory from The Women and Money Project 2016. Her piece "ON THE DOLLAR" was powerful, meaningful and still is the most pressing issue for many women world wide. This piece was carefully conceptualized and designed by Camille Gage as a quilt with actual dollars (cut) to demonstrate the gender inequity in pay in percentage (by state) what Black, Native, Latina and White Women receive in wages. A grim look at what women actually have to work with to feed their children and 6 years later even more destabilizing.
