September is National Su***de Prevention Month (NSPM) which was declared in 2008. The main purpose of having the NSPM was to spread awareness and to acknowledge those affected by su***de.
In the U.S, su***de is the 2nd leading cause of death for people ages 10 to 35. Men make up 79% of the U.S su***de rate. These rates arenβt staying still, per year, there is an average of 800,000 people worldwide who die due to su***de, which is roughly one death every 40 seconds. Unfortunately, this number continues to climb in 2023.
When seeing signs of people being suicidal, donβt be afraid to approach them and talk to them. Early signs may be isolating oneself, talking about being a burden or a problem, sleeping too little or too much, talking about wanting to die, and even more.
Why are people suicidal? People may be suicidal due to trauma, abuse, loneliness, mental health problems, addiction, postnatal depression, financial issues, housing problems, family arguments, and many more reasons.
Being suicidal does not mean they are seeking for attention. In most cases, suicidal people ask to be left alone or they always avoid drawing attention. Do not estimate that someone who is suicidal will NOT commit su***de just because they look completely fine. Just because someone lived after attempting su***de doesnβt mean they wont attempt again.
Prevent it before it happens. It doesnβt hurt to help, it hurts to suffer in silence. Hear their voices out, let them pour it all out and listen attentively. DO NOT ignore them.
If you or a loved one are in emotional distress or suicidal crisis, please know that your life matters and that you are not alone.
