We are super excited to finally start to see some of the vision that we have not been able to launch coming to fruition. For those who may not know: A little over 3 years ago, we opened Bay Six:Mingo to serve the community of Mingo Junction, Ohio.
Our vision was to not only serve the young people of Mingo by providing a positive place to hang out, but to also serve adults with the main goal of helping restore or establish family and create a sense of belonging for those who needed it. Part of that vision is to implement an after school meal program in which kids can stop in and grab a quick “brown bag” meal to either take home or eat in our building while they hang out.
Up until this point, due to multiple reasons that were out of our control, we have not been able to get this project started. However, with our new building open and the extra space it provides, we feel that now is the right time to launch a new part of our Bay Six: commUNiTY project. Today we went shopping and grabbed multiple items that can be made into these “brown bag” meals. The idea is that each bag will consist of one “entree” type item (hot pocket, mac n cheese, small frozen meal, or a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, etc.), one salty snack (crackers, chips, popcorn, pretzels, etc), one sweet treat (cookies, crackers with peanut butter, chocolate, etc.) and a cup of fruit. Bottled water or cans of pop/soda will also be available to go along with the brown bags. The hope of this project is that not only do we help meet the need of hungry kids or adults, but to also encourage more positive interaction in the lives of those who may otherwise just head home to a lonely house or go make decisions that could negatively affect their future.
With that, starting today we will have “brown bag” or “quick meals” available for kids to grab after school or adults to grab after work. (CONTINUES IN COMMENTS)..
