🐾 TNR UPDATE! 🐾

This guy is officially back where he belongs! ❤️

After trapping him, we were concerned about his drooling, his eye, and what looked like a possible BB gun injury on his neck. Here’s what we learned during his medical visit:

🐱 Mouth: He had some eroded connective tissue inside his mouth, which may be contributing to his drooling.

👁️ Eye: His eye is abnormally smaller than usual, but thankfully, it was described as “quiet,” meaning there’s no active inflammation.

🕷️ Neck area: What we initially thought might be a BB gun injury turned out to be an area where ticks were attached. The ticks were removed, and he received a long-acting antibiotic injection that will last for two weeks and will also help his mouth.

Today, he was released and was VERY happy to be out of that trap! 🥹❤️

Another community cat receiving the medical attention he needed, thanks to TNR! Every cat deserves a chance. 🐾

💔 This poor soul was trapped this evening🐾

It looks like he may have a BB gun injury on his right side. His eye doesn’t look normal, and he’s drooling. We’re hoping to get this boy the medical attention he desperately needs. ❤️‍🩹

The laws that affect cats aren't made in Congress. They're made at your city council and county commission by your neighbors. 🐾

Stacy sits down with Danielle Bays, animal policy expert and architect of Washington D.C.'s citywide community cat program, for a conversation that every TNR advocate and community cat caretaker needs to hear.

Danielle's advice is simple and powerful: introduce yourself to your local officials before there's a problem. Because the first thing they usually hear about cats is a complaint and that's often how feeding bans happen. She explains how cats quietly get folded into wildlife feeding restrictions without anyone noticing until the ordinance has already passed, and what the alternative looks like: timed meals, clean sites, property owner permission, and caretakers who feel safe feeding in the open.

As she points out, once you prohibit something, you can no longer monitor whether it's being done well.

Danielle and Stacy also dig into return-to-field, what sets it apart from TNR, and how the updated Return-to-Field Handbook moves away from yes-or-no rules toward decisions about each individual cat. And they close on a note that feels especially timely: whatever someone's politics, you can almost always find common ground by talking about cats.

This week, we were able to help a couple of community cats in the next town over who needed medical care. ❤️ We couldn’t leave them without help, but those vet bills add up quickly!

This, 100%.

People don’t see the side of rescue where we are grieving the ones we couldn’t save. When everyone else turned their heads but us. We are constantly grieving other peoples neglect. This image may be offensive to some but to me it’s a reminder she had someone see her, someone got to grieve her & someone tried to save her. How crazy is it I had to beg the person whose property she was on 3 years ago, just to get her spayed? And 3 years later I get a call she’s dying. Did they notice she was declining months before the call. Maybe, maybe not. Either way she didn’t get a fighting chance because “she’s an outdoor cat”, “it’s unnatural to get them fixed” & “maybe she just wasn’t strong enough” These are the type people you meet when you do TNR. One thing I’ve learned while doing rescue is just how easy it can be to become bitter. Constantly explaining why they can’t just live off of hunting, constantly explaining why they shouldn’t keep reproducing. As the cats are skin and bones because they don’t get fed anything but parasitic mice. (If their lucky to have caught anything that day) As multiple of the litters have died in front of them. As multiple of the females that keep having litter after litter look 10x older than they should. As cats with baby teeth are already pregnant. As the cat who got injured/attacked waits outside to be put out of their misery. As the toms are all scratched up and mangled from fighting each other. Sometimes you really get tired of explaining empathy to people who just don’t have it. Everyday’s a reminder of why you do rescue. Because if not you, who?
