It is time to begin VFW Essay contests, Voice of Democracy (grades 9-12) & Patriot's Pen (grades 6-8). Applications can be found at the Louisa County Post 8947 in Mineral and at the Louisa County Library. The contests are open to students enrolled in public, private, parochial or home school programs. This year's theme isthe same for both levels, "What A Veteran Taught Me About America". The first, second & third place winners at the local level receive a monetary award. First place is sent to District and first place District is sent to State. First place State winner is sent to National. Top prize at National is a $35,000 scholarship paid to the University, college or Vocational/Technical school the winner attends. Every state winner going to National will receive $1,000 there. If you have a high school student or you know of one, encourage them to enter. This is a great chance for them to show off their writing skills and win some money.
