What if the invitation you've been given is the most important choice you will ever make?

Pastor Steve Prestridge guided us deeper into the parable of the wedding feast in Matthew 22, reminding us that God's invitation goes out widely to both the bad and the good. He explained that we make ourselves unworthy only when we reject that gracious call, which is ultimately a rejection of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. True salvation requires a genuine response of repentance, and while we are never justified by our own works, a transformed life will always produce the fruit of faithful obedience. He urged us to examine our hearts, trust God's word, and faithfully invite others to hear the gospel.

Building on the second part of Jesus’ parable of the tenants in Matthew 21, this message confronts the dangerous trap of spiritual leaders acting like politicians rather than servants of God. Pastor Steve Prestridge walks through how Israel’s religious elite—blinded by their own self-righteousness, fear of the crowds, and lust for power—missed the very heart of God, ultimately rejecting His prophets and killing His Son. Jesus uses their own words to trap them in their hypocrisy, showing how they condemned themselves when answering what the master of the vineyard would do to wicked tenants.

At the center of this text stands Jesus as the prophesied Cornerstone from Psalm 118:22, which reads, "The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; this is the Lord's doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes." While the religious leaders stumbled over Him because His grace dismantled their system of works, Jesus remains an unmovable rock. Those who do not accept Him as the cornerstone will ultimately be broken or crushed by it, discovering that there is a God and we are not Him.

Because of their rejection, the responsibility of the "vineyard" was taken from them and entrusted to new tenants—the church. Steve emphasizes that true belief cannot be separated from obedience, reminding the congregation that salvation and fruitfulness go hand in hand. Believers are now called to be living stones, built up into a spiritual house to offer spiritual sacrifices through Jesus Christ, as Peter describes in 1 Peter 2:5.

Ultimately, the sermon calls the church to reject the cowardly pursuit of human approval and worldly power. Citing 1 Thessalonians 2:4, Steve challenges leaders and believers alike: "We are not trying to win votes or get people to like you... we speak, not to please man, but to please God who tests our hearts." True ministry is anchored in the uncompromised Word of God, driven by character rather than talent, and focused entirely on the mission of making disciples for His glory.
