Otters are seen regularly in Kellogg Creek and here was a whole romp of them on the Willamette near the mouth of Kellogg Creek. Has anyone ever seen one in MInthorn?

Wowza! We've heard of a couple of river otters spotted here and there in Kellogg and Johnson Creeks, but this photo of a much bigger group on a dock in the Willamette between Milwaukie Bay Park and Elk Rock Island was captured by Island Station resident Dave Tyler back in November. We have more otters in the area than folks might realize. . .

EDIT: A commenter below noted that a group of otters is called a "romp." Sure enough, that's true! See this Minnesota article with lots of photos:

Work parties in Minthorn are on summer hiatus -- look for them to return on the Second Saturday of September.

Meanwhile, there are other ways to get involved in local parks and greenspaces this summer, such as the Duck Race Over Kellogg Dam on Saturday, July 12, part of Milwaukie Fest. Check it out!

One of the MPF Founding Board Members, Wilda Parks, recently bought 20 sponsorship tickets for the Duck Race Over Kellogg Dam, coming up on July 12th. Since there are only 300 ducks, Wilda has some pretty good odds in her favor.

There will be some duck sponsorships available on the 12th at Milwaukie Fest, but if you want to be sure you have your chance to win the $150 cash prize, you may not want to wait. If you use Venmo and are buying at least four tickets ($20), you can contact us via Messenger or at [email protected] and we will arrange for payment via Venmo and then send you your receipts via snail mail.

As a reminder for those who haven't participated before, for a $5 sponsorship, you are assigned a numbered duck, and if that duck crosses the finish line first, you win $150 cash. Second and third place ducks win their sponsors $100 and $50, respectively. The remainder of proceeds are split between the Milwaukie Parks Foundation and the North Clackamas Watersheds Council.
