What a Summer of Wild Success for access ♿️ 🎉💰🤯 𝙲𝚎𝚕𝚎𝚋𝚛𝚊𝚝𝚎 & 𝚂𝚊𝚟𝚎

We’re blown away. 🤯 The Metro grant vote results are in: WE DID IT!! 🎉

The #1 project in the Voters Choice contest is our pet project: Open Water Swimming Access at Milwaukie Bay Park 👏 across from SaunaGlo with ♿️ ADA design!

The City Council just approved the project budget dedicating $166,400 in funding. They also voted to explore construction of a non-motorized swimming dock ✔️✔️✔️ Thank you to Human Access Project and City of Milwaukie, Oregon

Hot off the press!! Congratulations to on winning the Best of Portland reader choice award! Incredible space that elevates PDX as a world-class thermal destination. And one way to level up even more: please add a bucket and ladle in your sauna 🪨💦♨️

Interestingly, doesn’t go for steam in the sauna either! Thankfully one on this list is lifting the spirits of the löyly, since 1978, Portland’s O.G. bathhouse:

Guests at SaunaGlo are highly encouraged to go to town with the steam — we provide a huge ladle, a 5 gallon basin of water that’s always full, and over 500 pounds of stones surrounding our dual heaters.

Real sauna requires the freedom for folks to bathe in the moisture at-will. It’s a softer steam that should always cradle and caress, never sting.

🇫🇮 The term in Finland: Lämpömassa, which is the Finnish word translating to “heat mass” and relates to the thermal capacity of the sauna stove and the characteristics of how a high-fidelity sauna provides a pleasing steam experience with depth and enveloping, fresh air flow rather than a knockoff ‘sauna’ that stifles and stings. Free live music at SaunaGlo, Friday July 17. 🎶🎤🎸🔊🤘

The brand-new outdoor seating area at SaunaGlo will have live music by Charlotte Thistle at 6:30pm and Paul Atticus Logan at 7:30pm.

This will be the grand debut of our new river-view Front Porch we’ve been building! Enjoy the music along with a cold beer, wine, hard cider or Florida Seltzer!

6:30pm Charlotte Thistle sings songs with soul, substance and sass. She’s known for her storytelling and uncompromising lyrics, set to toe-tapping tunes with singable melodies. She has appeared at festivals and coffeehouses around the Pacific Northwest and has released two albums.

7:30pm Paul Atticus Logan .guitar is known for ornate fingerpicking compositions and he brings the old-world joy of communal singing with 400 year old ballads, 200 year old shanties, and the folk blues of just a century ago.

Porchfest is a free annual festival of performances on porches, driveways and public spaces across Milwaukie. There are almost a hundred mini-concerts going down all across Milwaukie.

It’s organized by the volunteer-based Milwaukie Arts Committee and takes place on the last 3 Fridays of July every year. We 💛 this place!

17° warmer. It’s how we’re different. Some cold plunges run an icy 33° vs our sweet spot at 50° — still cold without that frostbite freeze.

Ice baths & frozen lake dips might fire for the Instagram algo, but not for real life, or the best physical and mental health effect.

Pushing the extreme limit is great to test your metal, but for forming a routine healthy habit — minimum effective dose. A couple minutes in our “warmer” water does the job.

17° might not seem like much, but try it and you’ll see.

🫵 You have the power to direct public funding

The scenic Willamette River is a vital public cold plunge to cherish, protect and promote.

A new SAFE & ACCESSIBLE swimming spot for all ages and ability levels at Milwaukie Bay Park across from SaunaGlo.

The new Voter’s Choice Grant Program is a “participatory” democracy.

The official voting for ***Nature in Neighborhoods*** takes place online, and it’s open now until June 15th 🗓️

Anyone over the age of 10 who lives in the Portland Metro area is eligible to submit their own Voters Choice ballot at the Metro Agency website.

Presently the park at Milwaukie Bay offers a single option for accessible water entry point — a boat launching ramp.

No one wants a tragic injury or death.

It’s commonplace to see kids swimming near boat propellers, and it’s commonplace to see reckless boating.

Further, urban swimming isn’t just about recreation. It’s about public health, community connection, and environmental stewardship.

According to the Alliance swimmable waterways promote physical and mental wellbeing, climate resilience, and ecological awareness. They also help reclaim urban rivers as shared civic spaces, fostering a deeper connection between people and nature.

Further, cities around the world have seen major economic boosts from investing in swimmable urban spaces. A swimming area at Milwaukie Bay Park would attract families, visitors, and water enthusiasts — bringing more foot traffic to downtown shops, cafes, and events.

This project also serves as a catalyst:

This first step would realize a gradual-slope sidewalk leading down to a water entry point. It’s a low-grade ADA accessible plan and would offer predictable footing for bare feet rather than rocks. The vision also includes swim buoys to signal a no-wake zone to boaters.

A follow-up step then could realize a bonafide floating swimmer’s platform and kayak launch dock (great for paddleboarders too!)

Let’s continue to manifest our dreams with optimism and determination, working in unity for good!
