As much as we always hope for a happy ending, not all rescues end in adoption....
That was the case for Lyra.

Lyra's story starts off uniquely challenging. She came from a breeding situation, after being poisoned and needing emergency bowel resection intussusception removal surgery. Lyra was surrendered into CMCR’s care shortly after the surgery. She was in terrible health. She was only about 2 years old, extremely malnourished, underweight at just 4 lbs, with extreme diarrhea that could (and did) clear a room. She wanted nothing to do with the kittens she came with, and nothing to do with people or affection.

After many vet appointments and tests, she was diagnosed with Short Bowel Syndrome, IBS, a Taurine deficiency, and a B12 deficiency. Meaning the diarrhea was for life. That followed with a strict Hydrolized diet, weekly B12 injections, and multiple twice a day medications. Lyra knew we were trying to help, so thankfully she was an angel when it came to taking medication.

Lyra slowly but surely gained weight. She got all the way to 7 lbs! Her energy picked up, and she was much more open to receiving affection.

Her true love was for the outdoors. She was a huntress at heart. Catching flies was a specialty. She loved to roll on the concrete and sunbathe, to hang out in the catio, and was even getting used to being on a leash. Her spirit shined when she was outside. Her foster parents were angels with entertaining this greatest desire for Lyra making sure she was supervised and safe while enjoying the fresh air.

Once Lyra’s health was under control, she was cleared for spay surgery! Everything went normal, she had a fast recovery. However, shortly after the spay she started losing weight again. She also became bored with her food. Then that started a trial and error of different kinds of food her body could tolerate, and added appetite stimulants. Boiled chicken was a fan favorite.

For the next four months, her health would take one step forward, two steps back. She was back down to her original intake weight.

Then, after hardly eating anything for a few days in a row, her foster mom reached out to CMCR letting them know she wasn’t doing good. That night she got SubCu fluids, she ate a little bit, and seemed to have perked up. It was decided she could wait until the morning to go to the vet.

The next morning, it was clear it was an emergency. After being rushed to the vet, just a few hours later, the dr called and said there wasn’t anything more they could do.

She was surrounded by her village, with love, and passed peacefully.

We have to take warmth in knowing that she was loved without condition, supported every step of the way, and that her incredible foster parents, doctors, and CMCR did everything in our power to help this girl. Together we gave her another year of life that she likely would not have had—and that year was glorious. Although challenging, she seemed happy and was so well cared for.

As hard as it is to feel this heartbreak in rescue, what matters most is that she got to leave this world being held, loved, and fought for.

Sometimes love simply looks like trying, even when knowing the outcome will probably break your heart.

Please join us in celebrating Lyra's life and knowing she rests peacefully now.

❤️‍🩹 Cashmere Update ❤️‍🩹

Cashmere is in much better spirits today, according to her foster. She currently has a drain tube in place and more stitches than we could count, but she's resting comfortably and receiving the care she needs.

She still has a long road to recovery ahead of her, but we are hopeful and so grateful for everyone who has supported her journey so far. Every donation, share, and kind word helps us continue giving Cashmere the chance she deserves. Thank you for standing with her. ❤️

💙🐾 Volunteer Appreciation Post 🐾💙

It truly takes a village… and this weekend, our village showed up in the biggest way. ❤️

A huge THANK YOU to every single volunteer and foster who gave their time, energy, patience, and love to help make our adoption event such a success. Whether you were answering questions, introducing cats to potential families, cleaning kennels, transporting kitties, setting up, tearing down, or simply being there with a smile—you made a difference.

✨ A special shout-out to Brenda for handling all of the adoption paperwork like an absolute rockstar…You kept everything running smoothly, and we can’t thank you enough.

✨ And to Shona, thank you for tag-teaming to help potential adopters find their perfect match. You were amazing!

✨ But especially, Samantha S. None of this would be possible without her meticulous planning, organizing and ability to orchestrate these events and so much more. We could not be more fortunate to have you. Thank you!

✨To our incredible fosters and volunteers—Samantha C, Mari, Paula, Kathy, Carol, Sarah, Sarah, Paola, Annie and family, Barb, Ashley, Maven, Laura, Aaron, and everyone else who jumped in wherever they were needed… THANK YOU. 💕

✨We also want to shout-out Brianna and Amie for helping with the flyers and getting the word out!

✨Can't forget Chris! She works behind the scenes tirelessly to get cats up on the website to better reach the new families!

✨And as always, our PetSmart partner stores for hosting us and giving us the space and platform to make this possible!

If we accidentally missed your name, please know it wasn’t intentional. There were so many wonderful people pitching in, and every single one of you played an important part in making this event possible.

Because of you, more cats had the opportunity to find loving homes, and that’s something worth celebrating. We couldn’t do this without our incredible Cats Meow Cat Rescue family.

From the bottom of our hearts… thank you. 🐾💙

🚨 URGENT: Cashmere Needs Your Help 🚨
Sweet Cashmere has already endured more than any cat should. 😿
She was discovered by one of our fosters with a severe wound that had become infested with maggots. Our foster immediately contacted Cats Meow Cat Rescue, and we stepped in to give her the emergency care she desperately needed.
Cashmere has undergone emergency surgery to clean and treat her wounds, and she is now receiving the medical care she needs to begin healing. While we're hopeful for her recovery, the cost of her treatment is significant.
Kitten season has hit us especially hard this year, and our rescue's resources are stretched to the limit. We never want to turn away an animal in desperate need, but we can't continue this lifesaving work without your support.
💜 If you're able, please consider making a donation to help cover Cashmere's emergency medical expenses. Every dollar, no matter the amount, goes directly toward her care and helps us continue saving cats like her.
If you're unable to donate, sharing this post is another powerful way to help us reach people who can.
Thank you for standing with Cashmere and giving her the chance to heal, recover, and one day find the safe, loving home she has always deserved.
