The Equality Act is a landmark piece of federal legislation that aims to amend the Civil Rights Act of 1964. It provides consistent, explicit non-discrimination protections for LGBTQIA+ Americans across key areas of daily life, including employment, housing, credit, education, and public spaces. The Supreme Court ruled in 2020 that existing federal civil rights laws protect the LGBTQIA+ community from employment discrimination. But it didn’t go far enough. Other vital areas like housing or public accommodations weren’t included, and can still be subject to judicial or executive interpretation. The Equality Act aims to lock these safeguards permanently into federal statute.
