Today we walked Mt. Scott Creek through Mt. Talbert Nature Park with our partners at Metro , Oregon Department of State Lands , and Inter-Fluve people + projects . Unfortunately, the warming climate is killing our local western red cedar trees, and we are working together to use these dead and dying trees to create log jams and instream habitat for fish. Instream woody debris slows fast-moving currents, creating deep, cool resting pools for fish. These log structures also trap spawning gravel, filter nutrients that support the aquatic food web, and provide essential overhead cover to protect young salmon from predators.

Today we partnered with The Xerces Society to conduct freshwater mussel surveys behind Kellogg Dam. These are Oregon floaters, one of the species of freshwater mussels found in our region. This research was funded by Oweb Oregongov using paddle boards donated by Alder Creek Kayak & Canoe . We couldn't do this kind of work without the support from fabulous organizations like these!

Wondering what’s lurking beneath the surface of Kellogg Creek?

Join us on Saturday, June 20 from 9:30 a.m.– Noon as we survey aquatic macroinvertebrates at the creek’s confluence with the Willamette River to find out! These tiny bugs can tell us a lot about water quality and creek health!

The data collected by volunteers supports local student monitoring efforts and helps us better understand the health of Kellogg Creek prior to restoration (read more about our student macroinvertebrate monitoring program on our website)!

No experience needed - we’ll provide all the training and equipment. Just come ready to learn, explore, and maybe get a little muddy!

Calling all volunteers! Help clean up Kellogg Lake and support the future restoration of Kellogg Creek!

Join us and our partners on Saturday, July 11 for a volunteer cleanup of Kellogg Lake! Choose your adventure: collect trash from the Kellogg Impoundment (Kellogg Lake) by canoe or help clean up the surrounding parks and natural areas on foot.

No experience necessary—just bring your enthusiasm, a willingness to get a little muddy, and a desire to give back to your watershed! Volunteers should be 16 or older, and comfortable navigating uneven terrain and muddy conditions.

We went out a few weeks ago with our friends from Biohabitats to install our temperature loggers in creeks throughout our watersheds! Temperature loggers will stay in place from May - October, and help us track stream temperatures during the warm summer months.

This will be our 5th year of monitoring stream temps, thanks to funding from the Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board! Our hope is continue temperature monitoring in perpetuity to track watershed changes and plan for climatic resiliency!

Get involved with the Kellogg Creek Restoration and Community Enhancement Project this month!

👀Join us on May 27th for a site tour of Kellogg Dam and the creek restoration area to learn about the project!

🐜On May 30th, help us collect data to monitor water quality in lower Kellogg Creek through our macroinvertebrate monitoring program! No previous experience necessary!

Check out this cool video taken on Cedar Creek this spring! These are spawning Western Brook Lamprey, a native lamprey that is resident in our small creeks and rivers. Both males and females work together to construct a circular pit-style nest. In this video you can see the male using a courtship behavior where he slides up the female's body with his oral disk up to her head. Cedar Creek runs through Mt. Talbert Nature Park, where it joins Mt. Scott Creek. A special thank you to Tony, who shared his amazing videos with us.

Thank you to all the amazing volunteers that came out and made the 2026 Kellogg BioBlitz such a success!

It's that time of year when we are calibrating our temperature loggers to install for the summer! These tiny little units record a temperature every 30 minutes for five months (mid-May to mid-October). They allow us to track summer water temperatures every year and record changes over time. Knowing that we already have low water levels this year, we are anticipating that our creeks are going to be extra warm this summer, which is not ideal for our cold-water loving salmonids. This year we are installing 33 loggers!

Join us on Wednesday, May 27th from 5:30 – 6:30 pm, for a walking tour of the Kellogg Creek Restoration and Community Enhancement Project site! Learn more about this exciting project, its benefits for our community and urban wildlife, and the project timeline. We will meet at Milwaukie Bay Park, where we can see Kellogg Dam, to talk about its history and ecological impact. The tour will continue along the Trolley Trail, where we can get a good view of the Kellogg Impoundment, and discuss how that area will change once it has been restored!
