Metcalfe Park Community Bridges

Metcalfe Park Community Bridges Our mission is to cultivate resident-led community development rooted in social Justice. Practice leadership with, rather than over, each other.
(1)

In 2012, five Metcalfe Park resident leaders formed the Metcalfe Park Community Action Team (MPCAT) to join with neighborhood and citywide partners in considering how resident engagement could contribute to the improvement of Milwaukee’s Metcalfe Park neighborhood. The same year, Metcalfe Park was chosen as a site for the Building Neighborhood Capacity Program (BNCP), a federally-funded program th

at provided the financial resources and support for residents and partners to catalyze resident-driven neighborhood revitalization. Resident and partner involvement in the BNCP yielded a vision, mission and values for change, and led MPCAT to become Metcalfe Park Community Bridges. We welcome all residents to join in developing and implementing Metcalfe Park Community Bridges’ work. It is only in coming together to achieve our priorities – safety and placemaking, connectedness and cultural vibrancy, civic engagement, intergenerational wealth and opportunity, and health and wellness – that we can lift up our collective power to make progress toward our long-term vision of a robust and thriving community. Our Values

In our work with partners and each other, we commit to:

Put the community first. Ensure Metcalfe Park residents are active participants in and beneficiaries of its development. Engage youth and residents as equal partners in decision-making and co-create opportunities with them in mind. Work together over the long term to redevelop and reinvigorate Metcalfe Park. Metcalfe Park is a robust and thriving community.

Check out some photo highlights from our final We Outside Health & Wellness Fair that happened on August 28th🤞🏾❤️

This summer, 1,000+ community members/ households showed up in person, and we reached 4,000+ people with food, resources, wellness, and connection.

As pharmacies, grocery stores, clinics, and other resources continue to leave our communities, we’re committed to being outside with and for our neighbors, while building and restoring community-owned solutions that keep resources, power, and care in our community.

Thank you to everyone who showed up, supported, partnered, volunteered, and made We Outside possible.

will be back next summer. The WE OUTSIDE MOVEMENT is growing 🔥

Since the closure of our only grocery store in Metcalfe Park, we launched the countywide Food Justice Collective in the summer of 2025.

Since then, the Food Justice Collective has birthed some amazing things. It has become an active space to connect, strategize, build policy, develop community-led solutions, and imagine the future of food sovereignty.

One of the powerful visions emerging and led by the Kingdom Kitchen & Grocery Group, a group of Food Justice Collective members working to bring a community-owned, community-controlled, and community-run grocery, food, and pharmacy to life.

This is what food justice looks like: building solutions with the people most impacted, creating community ownership, and reimagining what our neighborhoods can have and control.

Read more about the vision, the work, and what Kingdom Kitchen & Grocery Group is building.

THE METCALFE PARK LIBERATION HUB IS MOVING FORWARD! ✊🏾

Yesterday was another major milestone for the Metcalfe Park Liberation Hub. The rezoning needed to bring this vision to life passed the City Plan Commission (CPC) unanimously!

This vote brings us one step closer to transforming the Liberation Hub into a community space rooted in food, housing, economic opportunity, culture, and collective care.

And we’re already moving. Deconstruction and lead removal have already begun, bringing us closer to full-scale rehabilitation and construction of Phase 1 of the Metcalfe Park Liberation Hub.

NEXT STEPS:

➡️September 15th: Zoning, Neighborhoods & Development Committee (ZND)
➡️September 22nd: Common Council
➡️Next: Mayor for signature

We want to give a HUGE thank you to every community member, partner, friend, comrade, and supporter who sent letters of support, showed up in person, joined virtually, testified, and helped move this vision forward.

As State Representative Kalan Haywood said during yesterday’s hearing:

“What is happening with Metcalfe Park Community Bridges, or Metcalfe Park as a whole, is truly inspiring … Residents are taking action. They’re not waiting for someone to come and save them.”

“I wish I could take what’s happening in Metcalfe Park and use it around the county, use it around the state. This is the blueprint.”

We’re not waiting to be saved. We’re building what our community deserves.

A MAJOR MILESTONE FOR METCALFE PARK!

Yesterday, the Metcalfe Park NID #13 was on the City Plan Commission (CPC) agenda, and our community showed up! Residents participated in person, virtually, sent letters of support, and signed the petition.

The NID passed unanimously! 🎉

Yesterday’s milestone brings Metcalfe Park one step closer to community control, a participatory co-governance structure designed by them, and pooled resources that are directed by the people who live here.

But we’re not done yet. Here are the next steps and public hearings:

➡️September 10th: Community Economic Development (CED) Committee
➡️ Next: Full Common Council
➡️ Then: Mayor’s signature
➡️Final: Elections

We’re moving forward, one step closer to a community-led NID #13.
