Today, April 3, is officially recognized as Safe Place for Newborns Day in Wisconsin! This meaningful milestone marks 25 years of the Safe Haven Law, protecting the health of mothers and babies in Wisconsin.

The Safe Haven Law provides a safe, legal and anonymous way for parents to relinquish their newborn up to 30 days old into the arms of a trained professional or newborn infant safety device.

Today and every day, we can raise awareness, educate and ensure every newborn has a safe start to life in Wisconsin.

Governor Evers has signed and it’s official. Wisconsin parents now have 30 days to safely surrender an infant to any hospital, police, fire or EMT staff as well as use of a baby box.
We always encourage direct surrenders (a person to person handoff) as anonymity is a part of the law no matter how an infant is relinquished.

This occurred at the University of Kentucky. There is a reason Safe Place for Newborns has a strong focus on and aware campaigns in college communities. It’s much easier to conceal a pregnancy away from family while at school.

Officers found the infant “wrapped in a towel inside of a black trash bag,” in a closet.
