“My work centers on celebrating Black beauty and culture, highlighting the richness of identity and the importance of representation. I aim to honor cultural expression while creating space for visibility, connection, and pride. I approach my process as both exploration and conversation. By blending digital techniques with a natural approach, I create expressive, intentional work that resonates with people, brings out emotion, and leaves a lasting impression. I studied New Studio Practice at MIAD and Art Therapy at Mount Mary for a few years. My current medium of choice is digital illustration although I am multidisciplinary.”

"I am submitting an oil painting that I created in December, 2025. My art is inspired by personal experiences related to identity, emotional growth and visibility politics. Reminded (2025) is a continuation of an older self-portrait that I created in 2019. Both paintings use circular motifs and handwritten affirmations—such as “I deserve to be happy” and “There is nothing wrong with me”—to express empowerment and confidence inspired by the symbolism of hoop earrings and their connection to self‑affirmation."

Artist: Kim Khaira
Follow the artist:
Kim Khaira is a Malaysian artist and community worker whose practice bridges gender policy, environmental and refugee advocacy with deeply personal explorations of home, heritage, and belonging. With roots in Dayak (Bidayuh, Iban) and Punjabi-Indian traditions, her work blends henna, batik, natural dyeing, and gardening as acts of cultural continuity and solidarity. Her First Blue Series (2024–2026) reflects her tropical upbringing, her family’s generational knowledge, and her disorienting relocation to Milwaukee, using the color biru to weave memories, migration, and emotional landscapes into an evolving narrative. Influenced by poets like Basho and supported by long-time collaborators across continents, Khaira’s art responds to Western blue iconography by foregrounding parallel histories of indigo and cobalt rooted in Africa and Asia, offering a tender, layered meditation on identity, movement, and the making of home.

Annual Members Show on view through May 22, 2026

We are proud to introduce the four artists selected by juror Kevin Miyazaki for our 2027 Featured Member Exhibition series:

Ellie Garry .garry
Sayvion Shakes
Quanyi Zhao
Michael Flanagan

Each year, during WPCA’s Annual Members Show, a guest juror selects four artists whose work demonstrates exceptional vision, creativity, and commitment to their practice. Each selected artist receives a solo exhibition in our Featured Member Gallery—opening on Gallery Night and running for approximately 10 weeks.

This year’s exhibition brought together 84 works by 35 artists, showcasing the depth of talent within Milwaukee’s creative community. We’re grateful to for his thoughtful selections and for supporting WPCA’s mission to expand access, uplift artists, and strengthen community through the arts.

Since its launch in 2012, the Featured Member Exhibition series has highlighted a dynamic range of artists—emerging and established—across mediums, styles, and perspectives. We’re excited to continue that legacy with this 2027 cohort.
