This AAPI Heritage Month, we’re reflecting on how our roots shape our work. We asked our team how their heritage or cultural background influence the way they show up in justice and liberation work.

Today, we're highlighting our 9to5 Wisconsin Organizer, Panhia Thao!

"My heritage as a refugee immigrant from a traditional patriarchal culture deeply shapes how I show up as an organizer. I carry the stories of women in my community, resilient, intelligent, and nurturing, who were often silenced, overlooked, and taught to diminish their power. Growing up, I saw how cultural norms demanded obedience and self-sacrifice from women, and how that stifled their voices and leadership. This lived experience fuels my commitment to creating spaces where marginalized voices, especially those of women of color, are heard, valued, and empowered.

Because I know what it feels like to be unseen, I center my work on building power within communities that have historically been excluded. I don’t just advocate for change. I work to dismantle the systems that silence and oppress, while uplifting cultural strengths like collective care, resilience, and intergenerational wisdom. My background doesn't just inform my work. It is the reason I do this work. Justice and liberation are personal to me, and I carry my ancestors' struggles and dreams with me into every space I enter."

The Legislative Session ended in Wisconsin a couple weeks ago and we want to share some key legislative updates on the bills we were tracking this session.

First up, we’re celebrating the passing of Postpartum Medicaid Coverage Expansion (SB 23/AB 97) which extends coverage to new parents after giving birth from 60 days to a full year.

Unfortunately, necessary care policies for working families in Wisconsin – Paid Family & Medical Leave and Investments for Child Care – were not prioritized. Working women and nonbinary people of color will continue to struggle picking between caring for themselves and their loved ones versus their income. This is not how an economy thrives, but we aren’t giving up.

**IT'S VOTING DAY!**

Today is the Spring Election and includes a crucial statewide race for a seat on the Wisconsin Supreme Court.

Whoever is elected will serve a ten-year term and will have final authority over key issues in our state, like reproductive rights, voting laws, fair maps, LGBTQ+ freedoms, and protecting our neighbors.

This vote is critical for securing our mission to build a future where working women and nonbinary people of color can thrive.

We will not enable the hostile takeover of our government that does not work for and harms working women and nonbinary people of color and our families.

This election is key to protecting our rights, stopping policies that attack us, and beginning to build an economy that works for all.

April 7th is the Spring Election and includes a crucial statewide race for a seat on the Wisconsin Supreme Court. This vote is critical for securing our mission to build a future where working women and nonbinary people of color can thrive. This election is key to protecting our rights, stopping policies that attack us, and beginning to build an economy that works for all.

We need to stand strong and vote for our values or our rights will be at risk. We can protect ourselves and our communities’ rights and well-being by electing judges who know how important the right to decide when or if to have children, making sure voting is fair, and upholding our state laws.

Yesterday, we were honored to attend Governor Evers signing Postpartum Medicaid Coverage (AB97/SB23) into law. Wisconsin was one of only two states without postpartum Medicaid coverage for up to a year. New parents suffered from only having access to healthcare for up to 60 days after the birth. Physical recovery from childbirth does not end at 60 days, and postpartum depression does not wait for insurance to return. Every parent deserves the time and care to heal and recover without the fear of losing coverage. And now, that is a reality for us.

We are proud to join forces with our partners in the Wisconsin Care Coalition and community members across the state in fighting for this bill’s passage. We spoke in-person to our representatives, called them, and collectively shared our messages online, letting them know that this is what Wisconsin families need and deserve. This goes to show the power our voices carry, especially when we come together arm-in-arm.

It’s and we want to talk about . On average, a woman makes 83 cents for every dollar a white male makes.

Ending the wage gap is essential to creating a future where working women of color, nonbinary people, and our families can thrive on our own terms without worrying about economic hardships.
