Family Values at Work

Family Values at Work Network of coalitions in 24 states organizing to win economic justice for ALL in America ♥️ 🇺🇸 Formed in 2003, Family Values @ Work coalitions are winning.

Too many people have to risk their job to care for a loved one, or put a family member at risk to keep a job. We’re made to feel that this is a personal problem, but it’s political – family values too often end at the workplace door. We need new workplace standards to meet the needs of real families today. The result will be better individual and public health, and greater financial security for f

amilies, businesses and the nation. Our coalitions represent a diverse, nonpartisan group of more than 1,000 grassroots organizations, ranging from restaurant owners to restaurant workers, faith leaders to public health professionals, think tanks to activists for children, seniors and those with disabilities. Family Values @ Work coalitions are active in California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas, Vermont, Washington, Washington, D.C., and Wisconsin. We’ve helped get paid sick days victories in San Francisco, Washington, D.C., Milwaukee, Seattle, and Portland as well as the state of Connecticut, family leave insurance laws in New Jersey and California, and paid parental leave in Washington state. These local and state wins are improving the lives of tens of thousands of working families and building national momentum for policies that value families at work.

DC residents know caring for a loved one goes beyond the parent-child relationship. That is why they voted for paid family and medical leave. Denying them this policy is unconscionable and harmful.

Mayor Bowser often talks about ensuring DC is business friendly. However, her proposed cuts to paid leave are anything but.

Care is essential to all of us. Every person will need time to give care, receive care, heal, or support loved ones at some point in life. Yet too many people are forced to choose between their health, their family, and their paycheck.

We can create policies that make care accessible to everyone — without risking our wellbeing, housing, or economic stability. We deserve a country where care is valued, supported, and possible for everyone.

You are not alone, and your experience matters. Connect with local organizers in the network from Hawaii to Rhode Island, from Florida to Washington State. We are building a future where everyone can afford time to care.

We’re proud that Family Values @ Work joined the Paid Leave for All Campaign, MomsRising, Main Street Alliance, National Partnership for Women & Families, A Better Balance, Caring Across Generations, and CLASP to release the first comprehensive report tracking paid leave progress since the pandemic and Build Back Better.

The findings are powerful: advocates secured substantive paid leave victories in 42 states and Washington, DC, advancing protections and support for millions of workers and families. These wins are more than policy milestones. They reflect years of organizing, coalition building, storytelling, and advocacy that continue moving us closer to the universal federal paid leave guarantee working people deserve. Momentum for paid leave is undeniable.

ICYMI, Family Values @ Work’s Board of Directors is proud to announce the appointment of Gayle Goldin as the organization’s new Executive Director.

Gayle brings decades of experience advancing economic justice, care policy, and worker protections through coalition building, policy strategy, and movement leadership. A former Rhode Island state senator, Gayle has also served as deputy director of the Women’s Bureau at the U.S. Department of Labor during the Biden–Harris administration, where she provided executive leadership to the only federal agency mandated by Congress to focus on the needs of working women. In 2025, she was invited, along with a dozen other Biden-Harris appointees, to join The Century Foundation for a one year fellowship.

Goldin previously served as campaign advisor to Family Values @ Work, partnering with grassroots coalitions nationwide to advance paid leave legislation and advocate for a national paid family and medical leave program. In Rhode Island, she championed landmark Temporary Caregiver Insurance legislation, helping make the state one of the first in the nation with paid leave protections and guaranteed job protection for workers using the program.

Gayle has dedicated her career to ensuring all people can care for themselves and their loved ones without risking their jobs or economic security. The Board is excited to welcome Gayle into this role and looks forward to the next chapter of strengthening the movement for care and economic justice for all.

We’re grateful to the organizers of the Funders' Committee for Civic Participation Annual Convening in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, held May 12–15, 2026, for creating space for meaningful, solution-driven conversations about the future of our democracy.

Carol Joyner and Marianne Bellesorte were proud to represent our work alongside organizers, advocates, and philanthropic leaders committed to building stronger, more equitable communities across America. At a time when our democracy faces urgent challenges, gatherings like this remind us of the power of collaboration, shared learning, and collective action.

We look forward to building new relationships and deepening partnerships that strengthen our network’s work advancing care policies for America’s workers and families, including paid leave, paid sick days, and policies that ensure everyone has the time and support to care for themselves and the people they love.

A special thank you to the gracious sponsor whose support made our attendance possible. We appreciate your investment in movement-building, civic participation, and a more just future for all.

Everyone cares, and at some point in our lives, we will all be caregivers. Men deserve the right to care and be open about the importance of caring for their loved ones.

There’s this underlying perception that because they’re not the ones physically giving birth, they’re somehow less entitled to that time.
