Friends of Saint Patrick Centre - Milwaukee Chapter

Friends of Saint Patrick Centre - Milwaukee Chapter To build positive and on-going relationships between Milwaukee and the Northern part of Ireland, and to work with the hungry and homeless in our community.

• Support the Saint Patrick Centre in Ireland and charitable organizations within our community, through volunteer and fundraising efforts.

• Learn actively about the different cultures and history of Northern Ireland through visits, talks and demonstration. This should be delivered through personal updates from the Director, speakers representing the traditions and cultures of the northern part

of Ireland and, when called upon, Young Ambassadors.

• Offer support for continuing links between the Chapter and the Saint Patrick Centre through initiatives like the Friends of Saint Patrick Young Ambassadors Program which will annually send young people to Saint Patrick’s Country in Northern Ireland to experience the cultures and traditions of the region and the reconciliation work of the Saint Patrick Centre and other organizations.

• Have a meeting with the Director of the Saint Patrick Centre in Milwaukee and updates twice a year.

• Promote the Friends of Saint Patrick at Irish Fest and other suitable events.

• Aim to have meetings at least quarterly and provide a forum for speakers from Northern Ireland on a range of subjects including musical performance.

• Partner with other local organizations working for a positive future in Northern Ireland.

• Support the cross community education programs conducted in Northern Ireland by the Saint Patrick Centre.

Jaden, Young Ambassador 2024, reflects on her once in a lifetime experience.

One of my favorite parts of the Young Ambassadors 2024 trip was visiting the Glencree Centre for Peace and Reconciliation. The Centre is the Republic of Ireland’s only peace centre, and does tremendous work to transform conflict and promote reconciliation around the world. Seeing the grounds and hearing about their work in the Good Friday Agreement was really amazing.

A look back at our 2017 Young ambassador, Gillian, sharing her experience.

"The Young Ambassadors Program allowed me to realize party politics and policy views were just a small part of the big picture of the Northern Irish peace process. Many of the people we spoke with had vivid memories of violence, discrimination, and instability from the not-so-distant past, and told us they chose the political party they felt would lead to the greatest likelihood of peace and “best chance for Northern Ireland” generally. They worried deeply about the future of their country, as well as the safety of their families and communities, and openly spoke of how willing they were to cross party lines to work together if it meant a functional and stable government which could leave the Troubles in the past, and respond effectively to tragedies such as the Grenfell Tower Fire, London Bridge attack, and Finsbury Park attack which all happened while we were there. I have begun to hear many of my friends, colleagues and family in the U.S. share similar views, and now that I’ve returned, I feel the program has better prepared me to have the tough political and historical conversations which hit far closer to home."

A look back at our young ambassador from 2023, Colleen, as she reflected in her blog.

"We woke up early today to see the sunrise. It was breathtaking. Then a few of us walked to a local cafe for breakfast. Later, we joined others on the tour and learned about the 1798 Rebellion in Downpatrick. After this, one other ambassador and myself met with an accomplished nurse practitioner and current nursing union member. We went to the hospital in Downpatrick to better understand the current struggles and perseverance of the medical system in Northern Ireland. As the day continued on, all the young ambassadors later met with a member of the legislative assembly and a member of the council representing the Alliance Party. We finished our day off as beautifully as it began by kayaking in the Strangford Loch and enjoying a meal on the island as the sun set. I am exhausted tonight, due to my own desires to get the most out of this Young Ambassador experience.

“The aim of the Young Ambassador Program is to establish a network of informed and influential individuals throughout North America who can actively represent the northern part of Ireland throughout their lives. Northern Ireland provides an incredibly diverse platform to learn about many social and cultural aspects of contemporary and historical life in Ireland as well as a developing model for community reconciliation which is relevant to many cities in North America.”
