When you’re carrying a heavy burden, it is so incredibly easy to tell yourself, "I have too many blessings to be depressed." I know that inner monologue well.

We stack up our gratitude lists as a shield, believing that if our lives look good on paper, we aren’t allowed to feel pain.

In our latest episode, psychologist Dr. Margaret Rutherford joins Carly and me to discuss why the denial of depression runs so deep, and how this kind of "toxic positivity" can actually keep us safely hidden but dangerously isolated.

Asking for help isn't a failure, friends. It is a profound sign of determination to heal.

Sharing a podcast episode or a story of lived experience with depression is like "offering an "olive branch"—a gentle way to open a door for a loved one who might be struggling, without being too upfront. (Listen here: https://recovery.com/voices/giving-voice-to-depression/)

It’s all about creating a safe space to talk, and more importantly, to listen. We are so grateful to the New York Tribe Theater Ensemble for sharing their insights with us on how storytelling heals. Check out the new episode today and let's keep keeping it real.

How do we help someone when they’re in the "rabbit hole"? Ben gives us a brilliant tip: Talk about it when things are going WELL.

Ask your friends: "When you're low, what can I do for you? A movie night? A daily text?" Having the game plan ready makes all the difference.

Are you depressed? Or just lazy?
We talk about that question in this week's episode: 🎧 Listen to this week's new podcast at recovery.com/podcasts/giving-voice-to-depression/

I’ve been thinking a lot about how hard it is to recognize depression when you’re in it.

Because it doesn’t always look like what we think it should.

It can feel like exhaustion that never lifts. Like waking up and already feeling done with the day. Like looking at a life that, on paper, is good… and still not being able to feel any of it.

In this conversation, we talk about that honestly. No filters, no clinical distance—just what it actually feels like to live with it.

If something feels off for you, or for someone you love, I think this might help put words to it.

What does it really look like to love someone with depression?

In this episode, we hear from a couple — both named Chris — sharing their real, unfiltered experience navigating depression together. One lives with it. The other has learned, day by day, how to show up, support, and stay grounded.

From stigma that starts in childhood…
To the invisible weight that makes getting out of bed feel impossible…
To the small, unexpected ways partners can help in the hardest moments…

This conversation offers something rare: both sides of the story.

If you’ve ever wondered how to support someone you love — or what that support might look like — this episode is for you.

I think a lot of people will recognize themselves in this one.

It’s about the “mask” we wear with depression—the ability to look okay on the outside, even when we’re really not.

Our guest, Andrew, talks about going to work, joking with customers… all while dealing with a constant loop of painful thoughts in the background.

That disconnect is exhausting. And it’s more common than people realize.

If you’ve lived this, we see you.

What we did know:
People need to hear they’re not alone in depression.
That hasn’t changed.
And neither has our commitment to keeping it real—and holding space for hope, too.
