Did you know that ICC has been hosting Student Immersion Day for over 40 years to celebrate Italian Heritage Month?

Today MPS students in grades 4 and 5 spent the day at the Italian Community Center learning and experiencing everything Italian. Students learned to play bocce ball, make pasta from scratch, they played Italian bingo-where they learned and spoke Italian words, they dressed up in costumes, carried suitcases, wore hats and scarves, aprons, and much more. They experienced what Italian immigrants experienced when they got off the ship from Italy/Sicily and arrived at Ellis Island. They take the oath, they were interviewed by officials, they were “examined” by doctors and nurses. They got a history lesson about the Italians in Milwaukee and then participated in a photo shoot where they reproduce old historic photographs from the Milwaukee Italian community from the 3rd Ward.

Lastly, they eat a fabulous pasta and meatball luncheon in Festa Ballroom while members from the Milwaukee Mandolin Orchestra perform live. AND OF COURSE, Peter Sciortino Bakery cookie gift packages for the students was a huge hit at the end of the day!

Students came with Italian passports that they work on at school prior to the event.

It is a fabulous day and a way that the ICC has been giving back to the community for decades!
