As energy usage and costs continue to rise, Milwaukee residents are finding relief through grants and programs designed to keep more money in their pockets. Joe Duncan, a Martin Drive resident, shared his personal story of how these initiatives have helped him save.

The months of February and September are slower on the neighborhood calendar, as there are not many events already planned. Meanwhile, neighbors discussed the idea of playing various board games with one another, such as Scrabble and cards. We bring different appetizers and snacks to share along with our favorite games. The next one is Friday, September 4, 2026, 6:30pm at the Washington Park Media Center 4303 W Vliet Street.

Game Nights started in February and September when neighbors thought of another way to have fun. Board games, cards, appetizers, and refreshments are all a part of the fun!

We Energies Time-of-Use (TOU) Program

“I switched to this tariff about two years ago. I didn’t change a single habit at first — and still saved money. Over half of my electricity was billed at the lower off-peak rate, while many neighbors still pay across the board simply because they haven’t called to switch. Result? Nearly $50 saved in July 2025 alone while using 100 more kilowatts than the previous year. I agree with the CUB — TOU works,” Duncan explained.

Time-of-Use can save money on your electric bill if you can use large appliances on evenings and weekends rather than weekdays.

SEE SOMETHING, HEAR SOMETHING, SMELL SOMETHING...SAY SOMETHING. It could save a life, prevent an injury, or stop a criminal act and help effect an arrest.

Neighbors can use this resource on when to call the police.

This website is also for making a police report on non-emergency incidents, such as packages being stolen. It is still easier to make a phone call, 414-933-4444. The website is good to add photos, ring video, etc.

If you see a crime, report it, please. Otherwise, it is like it never happened, because the Milwaukee Police and all their data will not know about it. Data is their way of communication, resources, patterns, and later arrest and justice.

I use the word "anything" in the subject because it is the Milwaukee Police Department's job to really figure it out. They will take your information and move forward. Of course, never chase after someone, get confrontational, etc. You literally call and report what you see; that's it. If a package is stolen, get all the information you have and make a call, so the Milwaukee Police know it happened.

You can literally call the police 24/7 for anything, even if you see them doing something in the neighborhood. Don't wait until hours later. The best people to answer your questions are the same people on the shift who are doing the investigation. Not the people on the next shift or even days later.

There have been a few changes to the neighborhood website from the front page and where there have been updates in areas designed to save you money. Much of the new content has been shared by neighbors over email, so there is a good place for the information now that can be updated, as most of the programs are long term.

For example, if you take advantage of the Time of Use Program, you could lower your energy bill by hundreds of dollars each year by changing nothing because most of us use more energy when we are home, than when we are not. Even people working from home can be strategic, and with this program, you can always decide to not use it after you try it out.

With this and other programs, there are ones for both renters, and homeowners, and for those looking for a home to buy in the future.

With all programs, if you never take advantage of them, your only guarantee is that you will not save money. I like this quote from a neighbor, "Rising energy costs don’t have to drain household budgets. With grants, rebates, and smart programs, Milwaukee residents can save money and improve efficiency — but only if they take the time to sign up and participate.
