This is a sample of one of the many Declarations of Intention and other naturalization documents available at MCHS’s Archive.

A "Declaration of Intention" also called "first papers" was the first step in applying for naturalized U.S. citizenship from 1795-1952. This process requires the "declarant" to pledge under oath that they "intend" to renounce their allegiance to any foreign nation and become a loyal United States citizen.

You can learn many details about a person from these documents. Ramon “Raymond” Romero was originally from Guadalajara, Mexico. He later lived in Milwaukee with his wife, Anna who immigrated from Yugoslavia, and their son Raymond.
