📆 Reminder! Upcoming workshop!

🎨 Jazz Gallery Center for the Arts is offering an Image Transfer Techniques Workshop that will take place in Jazz Gallery’s exhibition space on Saturday, October 17th, 1-3:30pm. This will be a 2 hour hands-on-session. It will cost $5 for JGCA current members or $25 fee for non-members. Learn multiple image transfer methods; inkjet print paper removal, laser print and solvent transfer, paper tape transfer, inkjet print on freezer paper. Bring your own fresh printed inkjet or laser jet image, or use one of ours. We will provide medium, gesso, and limited supplies for hands-on learning.

🎺 An incredible night of jazz is coming 🌟

Allison Philips is a Brooklyn-based trumpet player, composer, and educator. Currently Allison leads her quartet project with Neta Raanan (Tenor Sax), Isaac Levien (Bass) and Connor Parks (Drums.) Their Debut album “Make it Better” was released on Dox Records on May 16th, 2025. The music is a meld of adventurous improvisations and singable, almost folk like melodies.

Trumpeter Russ Johnson is a recent Midwest transplant after spending 23 years as an important member of New York City’s jazz community. He has 7 recordings as a leader or co-leader and performed on more than 75 recordings as a sideman. Russ has worked alongside many of the legendary figures in jazz including Lee Konitz, Steve Swallow, Bill Frisell, and Joe Lovano. In addition, Russ has recorded and/or performed with a long list of the most prominent musicians currently on the international jazz scene, including Myra Melford, Ken Vandermark, and Tony Malaby. Russ has performed in more than 40 countries across the globe.

Hannah Johnson provides an adventurous and joyful approach to her musical endeavors. In her Milwaukee based quartet, Heirloom, she brings a mesmerizing optimism and compositional voice. Her awe of rhythm, emotive harmonic structures and a touch of chaos drives Hannah’s musical approach. Hannah has become a highly sought-after side musician, playing with numerous regional and international artists and bands. She recently toured with soul and R&B artist, Durand Jones, who opened for country musician, Orville Peck, on his 2024 North American “Stampede Tour”.  She has performed with international artists including Rob Clearfield, Dayna Stephens, Geof Bradfield, and Sharel Cassidy.

⭐️ Emergent: a monthly series of improvised music featuring the Emergent Trio — Jane Buttars, piano; Rick Ollman, wind instruments; Eli Smith, drums — and featuring guest Hal Rammel, amplified palettes. A new guest the second Sunday of each month at the Jazz Gallery Center for the Arts.

✨ Emergent Trio: Formerly known as the Buttars/Ollman/Smith trio Trio, we’ve been together long enough to name ourselves with a word that evokes new realities born from the close listening of each member responding to the evolving music of the group as a whole.

🌟 About this month’s featured guest:

As a composer and improviser,Hal Rammel utilizes musical instruments of his own design and construction, releasing many recordings on his own label Penumbra Music. During the 1980s he was an active member of Chicago’s experimental and improvised music scene performing frequently with Gene Coleman, Michael Zerang, John Corbett, Terri Kapsalis, Lou Mallozzi, Jim Baker, Don Meckley and others. In the 1990s he performed at numerous music festivals in the United States and Canada including the Newfoundland Sound Symposium (in 1996 in duo with Johannes Bergmark), the No Music Festival (in 1998 with the Nihilist Spasm Band), and others. Presently, he performs with Linda Binder in the duo PaVda and with cellist Matt Turner in the duo Fractures & Phantoms.

Finding Center: A Sonic Memoir, is an immersive concert experience created by Chicago‑based guitarist, composer, and educator Donovan Mixon. This multi‑sectional performance weaves together contemporary jazz, improvisation, chamber textures, and global influences to form a deeply personal musical journey of resilience and renewal.

This is an AACM-supported presentation, bringing a Chicago creative music ensemble into a Highland Park gallery setting. The Art Center is an especially fitting space for the project because the music is rooted in memory, improvisation, composition, and dialogue — qualities that can resonate differently when presented in conversation with visual art.

Inspired by a life lived across Turkey, Europe, and the United States, Mixon’s latest project transforms trauma into beauty and connection. Finding Center is a meditation on chaos and calm, loss and love, despair and hope — a search for balance that feels both intimate and universal. “Music has been my anchor and my refuge,” Mixon shares. “It has helped me navigate the storm, find fleeting moments of peace, and hold onto the light even as darkness loomed.”

Joining Mixon on guitar, are four acclaimed musicians whose artistry amplifies the emotional depth of the work: Robert Irving III on piano, Fred Jackson Jr. on saxophone and flute, Cory Biggerstaff on bass, and Clif Wallace on drums. Together, they create a sonic landscape that invites listeners to reflect, breathe, and rediscover their own center.

Audiences can expect an evening of extraordinary musicianship and heartfelt storytelling – a celebration of music’s power to heal and connect.
