The MPS Community Gospel Choir
* PURPOSE: To share in the joy of music ministry to and with people of all ages, religions, races, cultures, and community settings.
* PRACTICES: Members of the MPS Community Gospel Choir gather at Marshall High School, most Monday nights from 6:00-7:45 PM. We always close with group announcements and group prayer.
* HISTORY: The choir was organized in 2006 by Mr. B

arry Applewhite, former Music Curriculum specialist for the Milwaukee Public Schools, for the benefit of 10,000 MPS students who perform in Milwaukee's Biennial Music Festival, allows students to realize that experiences like these can endure a lifetime. The choir expanded in 2009 to include members of Milwaukee's homeless community, who have found a new family in the choir. The Choir welcomes women and men of all ages, races, religions, abilities, occupations, and even communities.
* INVITATIONS: The Choir perform at a variety of religious congregations & community events, and welcome invitations to sing at a variety of venues, including churches and other religious settings; events sponsored by agencies, businesses, colleges and universities, and schools; and at private gatherings. The Choir recently performed in New York City, singing at various churches in Midtown Manhattan and Harlem, as well as at Ground Zero, the United Nations, and at Community Centers, Homeless Shelters, and Free Meal programs, in keeping with our ministry of singing with and for the homeless.
* DIRECTORS: Choir directors Arlene Skwierawski, a former music teacher at North Division High School, and K. Williams, a graduate of North Division, a Country Music Artist, and a traveling music teacher in MPS, lead the Choir in a repertoire of Gospel, Classical, and Contemporary music. They also conduct gospel music workshops for groups, such religious congregations, schools, and businesses.
* PRACTICES: The MPS ALUMNI COMMUNITY CHOIR practices most Monday evenings from 6:00-7:45PM, followed by announcements and group prayer. We meet at Marshall High School, 4141 N. 64th St., Milwaukee, WI.
* FUNDRAISING TO SUPPORT OUR MINISTRY: The funds raised at our performances help to cover the cost of expenses for the Choir as they share their Music Ministry throughout the USA and beyond. The Choir's CD, “We Are One”, is available for $10 as a fund-raiser for that purpose.
* Please support our work in one or more of three ways:
1) Spread the word to others;
2) Make a tax-deductible donation to CAPITA to support the work of the Choir;
3) Schedule the choir to sing at your religious, family, business, or community event.

🚫🎶🙏🏼 No choir this Monday because KC is in rehearsal with a Vincent black history program, and no word on Cortez Burt’s services yet—Some of you may also remember Bonnie Bell (Cheri’s longtime friend at Underwood Church)—she passed away on the same night as Cortez—two spiritual/musical greats passed on the same night. 🙏🏼🎶🙏🏼

Sign a petition to help save an innocent man:

The state of Texas plans to execute James Broadnax on April 30 for a double murder that he did not commit.

The actual shooter, Demarius Cummings, admitted that he, not James, shot the victims back in 2008 – an admission corroborated by the presence of his DNA on the murder weapon. He was sentenced to life without parole.

Our public outcry has stopped executions before – and now, we have just days to mobilize once again before it’s too late.

James's trial was tainted by racial bias. The Dallas County prosecutors deliberately removed all prospective Black jurors from the jury pool, leaving a then 19-year-old James to be convicted by a nearly all-white jury. James had no history of violence. Still, prosecutors introduced James' rap lyrics to persuade jurors that he was a threat to society, describing them as "gangster rap." Artists like Travis Scott and Killer Mike have supported James, arguing that rap lyrics are cultural and artistic expressions protected by the First Amendment, not indicators of any wrong doing.

The Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles as well as Texas Governor Greg Abbott have the power to intervene and commute James' death sentence.

We have to come together to save James. Join us: https://actionnetwork.org/petitions/texas-please-dont-execute-james-broadnax/?source=colorofchange_social

🙏🏼 NO Choir this Monday—our prayers for the family of Mr. Cortez B. 🎹 Gospel choir director & piano master (one of the founders of our choir) who passed on this weekend—KC sent this photo of Cortez & wrote: “I was just informed that Cortez passed last night. Don’t have any more details than that.” No choir rehearsals until we have the details of Cortez’s services.
