The MPS Community Gospel Choir
* PURPOSE: To share in the joy of music ministry to and with people of all ages, religions, races, cultures, and community settings.
* PRACTICES: Members of the MPS Community Gospel Choir gather at Marshall High School, most Monday nights from 6:00-7:45 PM. We always close with group announcements and group prayer.
* HISTORY: The choir was organized in 2006 by Mr. B
arry Applewhite, former Music Curriculum specialist for the Milwaukee Public Schools, for the benefit of 10,000 MPS students who perform in Milwaukee's Biennial Music Festival, allows students to realize that experiences like these can endure a lifetime. The choir expanded in 2009 to include members of Milwaukee's homeless community, who have found a new family in the choir. The Choir welcomes women and men of all ages, races, religions, abilities, occupations, and even communities.
* INVITATIONS: The Choir perform at a variety of religious congregations & community events, and welcome invitations to sing at a variety of venues, including churches and other religious settings; events sponsored by agencies, businesses, colleges and universities, and schools; and at private gatherings. The Choir recently performed in New York City, singing at various churches in Midtown Manhattan and Harlem, as well as at Ground Zero, the United Nations, and at Community Centers, Homeless Shelters, and Free Meal programs, in keeping with our ministry of singing with and for the homeless.
* DIRECTORS: Choir directors Arlene Skwierawski, a former music teacher at North Division High School, and K. Williams, a graduate of North Division, a Country Music Artist, and a traveling music teacher in MPS, lead the Choir in a repertoire of Gospel, Classical, and Contemporary music. They also conduct gospel music workshops for groups, such religious congregations, schools, and businesses.
* PRACTICES: The MPS ALUMNI COMMUNITY CHOIR practices most Monday evenings from 6:00-7:45PM, followed by announcements and group prayer. We meet at Marshall High School, 4141 N. 64th St., Milwaukee, WI.
* FUNDRAISING TO SUPPORT OUR MINISTRY: The funds raised at our performances help to cover the cost of expenses for the Choir as they share their Music Ministry throughout the USA and beyond. The Choir's CD, “We Are One”, is available for $10 as a fund-raiser for that purpose.
