We continue to recognize DeafBlind Awareness Month!

Here are some photos of Dani and Lejla on the road. As you know, The Center for Deaf-Blind Persons is a statewide agency. As we continue to do outreach, we are getting more referrals all over the state. When we get a referral, we first do an assessment to determine if we can help the individual seeking services. Pictured here are a few photos of Dani and Lejla doing an assessment in a potential client's home. Descriptions in the photo comments.

On Saturday, Center staff, clients, and board members were honored to take part in the Southeastern Deaf Senior Citizens 30th Anniversary Gala. The Center was one of the sponsors for the event. It was a lovely evening with excellent food, great speakers, and the hilarious comedy of John Maucere.

Our sponsorship was made possible in part due to a wonderful grant we received from Bader Philanthropies to enhance our work with senior citizens. Roughly 70-75% of the clients we serve are over the age of 60. As we know, people's vision and hearing change as they age. We are working to increase our outreach to senior citizens to make them aware of our services. A big thank you to Bader and thank you to the Southeastern Deaf Senior Citizens for having us at your 30th anniversary celebration.

As we shared last week, June is DeafBlind Awareness Month. Today, we are sharing this year's campaign from Helen Keller Services. The focus is on the power of touch for the DeafBlind community. Here is a quote from their campaign,

“Touch is the foundation of connection for the DeafBlind community. Through Protactile language, tactile sign language, haptics, braille, and assistive technology, DeafBlind individuals communicate, navigate, learn, work, and thrive. Touch can also build bridges with the broader world. When we connect through accessible communication, barriers break down and doors open to meaningful participation and genuine belonging.”

They are also offering two free webinars around tactile O&M Strategies and Protactile Philosophies.

We encourage you to take a moment to explore their campaign!

HKNC has unveiled the 2026 DBAW poster, joined by a national coalition. This year's theme, "Connected by Touch: Breaking Barriers, Building Bridges," highlights how touch enables connection for the DeafBlind community.

Exciting News! Evolving Canvas II will be held November 6th, 2026 from 6pm to 9pm. This year, we are holding the event at Beyond Vision. They were kind enough to offer us space to hold the event. Evolving Canvas is an interactive "paint and sip," with a twist. As the evening progresses, we provide challenges that impact participants vision and hearing to give them a sense of the challenges our clients face each and every day. We will have food, drinks, and a silent auction. Our event last year helped us raise $6000 for the Center. Our plan is to grow this event each year. In the coming weeks we will announce information about tickets. We have already started seeking sponsors and items for our silent auction. Keep checking back for more information. In the meantime, you can contact Adrian at [email protected] for more information or if you have questions!

Many people don't realize that we not only work with clients at the Center, we go to people's homes for training. Here is a photo of staff working with Jo Ann on organizing her kitchen. Our staff can help clients with organizing their home in a way that is efficient and safe for them. Roughly 60% of the work we do is around the state in people's homes. If you have questions about our services, give us a call today. (414) 481-7477 or email Adrian at [email protected].
