The wild rice harvesting season is just starting!
If you’re planning to harvest wild rice, make sure the rice is ripe before you begin. Mature seeds are knocked off easily. If significant force or striking is needed to remove the seeds, the rice is not ready to be picked and needs additional time to mature. Seeds mature and drop at different times, usually over one to two weeks. Leave unripened seeds behind so they can mature for a future harvest.
Harvesting gently helps wild rice return year after year. As you knock the mature seeds from the stalks, some fall back into the water and settle into the sediment. They’ll germinate there and help replenish the rice bed for future seasons.
Remember to be patient and harvest gently to help support healthy rice beds.
