TOMORROW! Join MTEA at the Juneteenth Parade June 19!

Juneteenth marks the historic date in 1865 when enslaved Black Americans in Galveston, Texas, finally learned they were free—more than two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed.

Please join the MTEA in celebrating Juneteenth by participating in the 55th Annual Jubilee Juneteenth Parade! It will take place, tomorrow, Friday, June 19th. Wear your MTEA green!

The Juneteenth Jubilee Parade assembles on West Atkinson Avenue between 8th Street and 18th Street. MTEA members will meet on the South corner of 16th St. and Atkinson. Arrive between 8:00-8:30 am. The parade starts promptly at 9:00 am.

THE ROUTE

From 8th Street, the Parade marches southeast on Atkinson Avenue to the 5 Points Intersection, then south on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, and ends at the intersection of Dr. MLK Jr. Drive and Burleigh Street. To exit the parade, head EAST on Burleigh St. to Holton St.

SHUTTLE SERVICE

This year, a shuttle school bus courtesy of transportation partners will be available to transport parade participants back to the line-up area. It will pick up at 1st & Burleigh St., drop off on Atkinson Avenue near the parade line-up area, and, on request, make occasional stops. Check with parade volunteers at the end of the route for details.

"School closures—commonly touted as a financially responsible strategy to right-size cash-strapped districts—often do not improve districts’ financial standing, according to a new study out of California.

Even worse: Any money actually saved from closing a school building is largely offset by funding lost when affected students withdraw from the district to attend school somewhere else."

The hope is that closing schools can reduce fixed costs. A new study looks into whether that happens.

Great things are happening at James Groppi High School in Milwaukee Public Schools. MTEA members & administration at Groppi held their annual Field Day Monday to celebrate cap & gown pickup with Groppi graduates, families, and community partners. Students also picked up graduation yard signs. All were treated to a cookout including BBQ ribs, brats, hot dogs, hamburgers, baked beans, potato & macaroni salad, chips, and cookies. As these photos can attest, a great time was had by all. What better way to celebrate the final day of high school?

Groppi staff shared their pride in the school being on pace to achieve their goal of 100 graduates for the 25-26 school year!

During the spring budget process MTEA members and building leaders at Groppi successfully fought back to force MPS administration to restore all classroom positions cut. Their advocacy and dedication will ensure future Groppi students receive the same level of care.

We wish the best of luck to all MPS graduates in all their future endeavors and MPS staff who work so hard every day in the service of Milwaukee students and families! We hope you have an enjoyable, restful summer.

We joined today's 8th grade completion ceremony at Townsend Street School. It was great to witness students being recognized for their many accomplishments and hard work over the course of the school year and their elementary careers. Thanks to the many parents, staff, and loved ones who helped mold and prepare students for all their future endeavors. We wish all MPS eighth grade students the best of luck next year in high school.

The eighth grade Townsend class want to extend a heartfelt thank you to Mrs. Sariah Merryfield and Mr. Muhibb Dyer for taking time to speak with and inspire their student body as they prepare to begin this new chapter in their lives. They will carry their message of perseverance, confidence, and determination with them into the future.

The eighth grade class would also thank the Townsend Events Committee for all their hard work, dedication, and support in helping make their completion activities and celebrations memorable. Thank you for everything you have done to help make this milestone special for students and families!

Milwaukee Alexander Hamilton High School unveiled their new student mural this morning. Students under the tutelage of Art Teacher John Fleissner have worked all year to paint a mural celebrating the diversity of the South Side of Milwaukee which also serves as a tool to educate about our watersheds and environment. See if you recognize many of the community landmarks in the photos.

This mural and other student created murals in the school improve the school visually, encourage student belonging, and showcase the school's commitment to community values, the international nature of the school, support for their diverse immigrant community and the need to protect our water!
