The Jewish Museum Milwaukee is dedicated to preserving and presenting the history of the Jewish people in southeastern Wisconsin and celebrating the continuum of Jewish heritage and culture. The history of American Jews is rooted in thousands of years of searching for freedom and equality. We are committed to sharing this story and the life lessons it brings with it, so that we may enhance the public’s awareness and appreciation of Jewish life and culture.

Through bold, thought-provoking portraits, artist Abshalom Jac Lahav explores the richness and complexity of Jewish identity in the Diaspora. Featuring figures like Golda Meir, Albert Einstein, Emma Lazarus, Harry Houdini, and even Elvis Presley, this powerful exhibit invites visitors to reflect on identity, heritage, and representation in new ways.

Through lived experiences and personal stories, a panel of Jewish women leaders working with different organizations and populations across the city will reflect on what it means to carry forward traditions of service, advocacy, and repair in today’s complex and often difficult landscape. A facilitated discussion follows, inviting participants to consider the challenges and rewards of this work and how values informed by justice, compassion, and communal responsibility can illuminate opportunities for supporting it.

Born Jerome Silberman in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Gene Wilder became a legend in entertainment with memorable performances on stage and screen. He first explored acting while attending Washington High School. From Broadway to beloved films like "The Producers," "Young Frankenstein," and "Blazing Saddles," his unique blend of humor and heart made him one of Hollywood’s most cherished performers

Wilder also captured audiences worldwide as W***y Wonka in "W***y Wonka & the Chocolate Factory" (1971). His whimsical, unpredictable portrayal blended charm, humor, and dramatic depth, helping the film become a beloved classic across generations.

Arthur Miller is among the most celebrated American playwrights of the 20th century. Miller rose to prominence on Broadway with "All My Sons" (1947), followed by "Death of a Salesman" (1949), which won the Pulitzer Prize, and "The Crucible" (1953), an allegory of McCarthy-era persecution.

In 1956, he married Marilyn Monroe, who converted to Judaism before their marriage ended in 1961. Later, in a new introduction to his novel "Focus" (1948), Miller reflected on evolving forms of antisemitism in America following the founding of Israel, reaffirming his enduring engagement with Jewish identity and experience.

In this authoritative and empathetic biography, Pnina Lahav reexamines the life of Golda Meir (1898–1978) through a feminist lens, focusing on her recurring role as a woman standing alone among men.

"The Only Woman in the Room" is the first book to contend with Meir’s full identity as a woman, Jew, Zionist leader, and one of the founders of Israel, providing a richer portrait of her persona and legacy. Meir, Lahav shows, deftly deflected misogyny as she traveled the path to becoming Israel’s fourth, and only female, prime minister, from 1969 to 1974.
