Arcos Milwaukee

Arcos Milwaukee Teach high school students how to be leaders, help them to change their community, bring them across the globe, watch them change their world.

We work to build relationships with area schools, community leaders, parents and social organizations interested in empowering teenagers to become local leaders with a global perspective. Ideal candidates for membership will demonstrate a desire to be agents that possess the resilience necessary to step outside of their comfort zones and stand out among their peers. Our program is comprised of two

3-month semesters. Students meet on a weekly basis for seminars on empowerment, self-identity and leadership. At the conclusion of the 1st semester, students will plan and implement a community improvement project of their choosing & design. The second semester curriculum will continue to build on the fundamental skills garnered in the first, but will also begin to incorporate elements of international awareness, cultural sensitivity, development studies, and language exposure. These resources will be put into practice during the capstone travel experience at the conclusion of the program, which will bring students to a partner organization to live and work along side people from across the globe. While similar organizations offering leadership development and international travel are sure to be cost prohibitive to members of our target population, Arcos students will incur no financial cost of their own. They will be provided not only with expenses associated with their Milwaukee improvement project and international travel experience, but will also be furnished a modest weekly stipend in recognition for their time commitment. As graduates of our program go on to college, volunteer opportunities and future professional endeavors, they will maintain a commitment to the program in a mentor role, creating a sustainable network of support that is continually expanding and increasing in momentum.

At Arcos, we promote meaningful travel--travel that informs, opens minds, respects the destination's culture, and, at its best, leaves travelers with many more questions than they brought with them.
How would you define meaningful travel?

When I tell people I’ve volunteered while traveling, they assume a church has been involved. It hasn’t. When I tell people I’ve been a program participant abroad, they assume I’m learning a third language.

We're back in Milwaukee, but we'll keep updating the Capstone Trip blog with pictures and stories, so keep checking in. Our board president Jessica offers her thoughts on the week:

"Nowhere has the human condition been so naked to me—the fragility of life juxtaposed with the preciousness of being alive. Intense suffering and violence exists alongside human warmth, affection, and celebration."

Day three on our trip and I woke up with a stomach ache, which sadly lasted the duration of the day. Wednesday’s schedule was packed and Arcos had to wake up especially early. After a delicious...

From Imani's blog post:

"At the office of Cofamide, a lady and two men spoke with us and they were in search for a nephew, brother and son who could be anywhere. Even if the migrants are dead, families are desperate to know because knowing what happened is better than not knowing anything at all."

Fantastic article about the power of listening and engaging youth in community improvement:

“The worst thing you can do is think that you know best and just start a business,” she [Judith, 21-year old owner of a successful grocery store in Uganda] says. “It’s vital that you share your idea with other people before you start.”

Listen, collaborate, engage, and watch the world change.

Those who want a prosperous future for the continent need to engage—and listen to—its young leaders.
